What is Depression?
Depression is a growing problem in China. Depression is common and can happen to anybody. In China, more than 54 million people (about 4% of the population), suffer from depression.
Fortunately, depression can be easily prevented and treated! Unfortunately the majority of people affected are not aware that their struggles have a name – depression -- let alone how to treat it.
To really understand depression, first we need to clear up some misunderstandings. Depression is a kind of illness, not a sign of weakness, and it can happen to anybody, at any age, even to people who are known to have a happy, outgoing character.
Depression is an illness that can be characterized by persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities that you normally enjoy, accompanied by an inability to carry out daily activities, lasting over at least two weeks.
In addition, people with depression normally have several of the following signs: a loss of energy; a change in appetite; sleeping more or less than normal; anxiety; reduced concentration; indecisiveness; restlessness; feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or hopelessness; and thoughts of self-harm or suicide.
What can you do if you think you are depressed?
1. Talk to someone you trust about your feelings. Most people feel better after talking to someone who cares about them.
2. Seek professional help. Your local primary health-care worker or doctor is a good place to start. Remember that with the right help, you can get better.
3.Keep up with activities that you used to enjoy when you were well.
4. Stay connected. Keep in contact with family and friends.
5. Exercise regularly, even if it’s just a short walk.
6. Stick to regular eating and sleeping habits.
7. Accept that you might have depression and adjust your expectations. You may not be able to accomplish as much as you do usually.
8.Avoid or restrict alcohol intake and refrain from using illicit drugs; they can worsen depression.
If you feel suicidal, contact someone for help immediately.
Remember: Depression can be treated. If you think you have depression, seek help.
