虽然汉语中的“大”可以修饰很多名词，如“大风”、“大浪”、“湿气大”等，但在英语里却不能一一对应。英美人形容雨大习惯用“重”——heavy
heavy rain（大雨）heavy fog（大雾）heavy snow（大雪）
除了heavy，还有一些很常见的说大雨的方式：
There is a downpour.
倾盆大雨（突然的大雨）
It’s really coming down out there! 外面雨下得好大啊。
It's pouring down rain.下着倾盆大雨
还有一种special说法

说雨大，和小猫小狗又有什么关系呢？
Rain cats and Dogs其实是一句英语谚语。
传说在古老的伦敦，一场倾盆大雨过后常常是汪洋大海，淹死许多迷路的猫猫狗狗。雨停水退后，似乎是天上落下了众多的狗和猫似的，因此后来人们就把Rain cats and dogs比作倾盆大雨。
In the middle of the picnic, it started to rain cats and dogs and everybody got soaked. 野餐进行到一半时，天突然下起倾盆大雨，每个人都成了落汤鸡。
与之相对应的，小雨也不叫small rain，而是light rain。
It's a warm day with light rain and winds.
今天是带有轻微雨和风的温暖的天。
我们也把小雨叫作drizzle（毛毛雨）或是sprinkles（稀疏小雨）。
It's drizzling outside.外面下毛毛雨呢。
You don't need an umbrella, it's just sprinkling.
你不需要伞，只是很小的雨。
最后再补充一个和雨有关的成语——“风雨无阻”。“风雨无阻”，与英文俚语“rain or shine”意思相同，表示——“no matter what the weather or other circumstances are like”。
他每天早晨出去跑步，风雨无阻。
