So then the seventh planet（星球） was the Earth（地球）. The Earth is not just an ordinary（普通的） planet! One can count, there 111 kings (not forgetting, to be sure, the Negro（黑人） kings among them), 7000 geographers（地理学家）, 900,000 businessmen（商人）, 7,500,000 tipplers（酒鬼）, 311,000,000 conceited（自负的） men—that is to say, about 2,000,000,000 grown-ups（大人们）.
To give you an idea of the size of the Earth, I will tell you that before the invention（发明） of electricity（电） it was necessary to maintain（维持）, over the whole（整个） of the six continents（大陆）, a veritable（名副其实的） army of 462,511 lamplighters（点灯人） for the street lamps（路灯）.
Seen from a slight distance（距离）, that would make a splendid（壮观的） spectacle（光景）. The movements（动作） of this army would be regulated（调节） like those of the ballet（芭蕾舞） in the opera（剧院）. First would come the turn of the lamplighters of New Zealand（新西兰） and Australia（澳大利亚）. Having set their lamps alight（点着的）, these would go off to sleep.
Next, the lamplighters of China and Siberia（西伯利亚） would enter for their steps in the dance, and then they too would be waved back into the wings. After that would come the turn of the lamplighters of Russia（俄罗斯） and the Indies（印度群岛）; then those of Africa（非洲） and Europe（欧洲）, then those of South America（南美洲）; then those of North America（北美洲）. And never would they make a mistake in the order of their entry（入场） upon the stage（舞台）. It would be magnificent（壮丽的）.
Only the man who was in charge of the single lamp at the North Pole（北极）, and his colleague（同事） who was responsible for the single lamp at the South Pole（南极）—only these two would live free from toil（苦工） and care: they would be busy twice a year.
