在初中英语中，表示“许多、大量”的单词和词组有many、much、a lot of 、lots of、plenty of、a number of、a deal of等。
它们的区别何在呢？
many、much和a lot of （lots of）意义最接近，也最常用。区别在于many只能修饰可数名词，much只能修饰不可数名词，而a lot of（lots of）两者皆可修饰。如
1. There are many flowers in our school garden.
2. I have much work to do.
这两句中的many和much也可改为a lot of .
它们之间的另一区别是many和much可以用于肯定句也可用于否定句和疑问句，而a lot of只能用于肯定句。此外，many、much可以和how、too、as等词连用，a lot of则不能。如
3. There is too much snow this year. 今年的雪太多了。
4.I’ve had so many falls that I’m black and blue.（P95,JB4）
plenty of 除了“许多、大量”之外,还含有“充分、足够”之意。和lots of 一样，它既可修饰可数名词也可修饰不可数名词，也只可用于肯定句。含plenty of的肯定句改否定句时，要改用many或much 。改疑问句时，则要改成enough .如
5. We have plenty of books in our school library.
6.Could you tell us if there’s plenty of rain in your county?（P14 ,JB5）
a number of 和a deal of 的区别与many和much的区别相似。前者只用来修饰可数名词，强调数多；后者只用来修饰不可数名词，强调量大。如
7. I have a number of letters to write. 我有许多信要写。
8.Don’t worry, There is a deal of time.
别急，还有不少时间呢。
这两个词组在应用时，常加上great、large、good等词起加强语气的作用。如
9.He spends a great （good）deal of money on pets.
他在宠物（猫、狗等）身上花了大量金钱。
10.There are a great （large）number of people in this street on Sundays. 星期天这条街上人特别多。
