我跟你打赌,你到现在一定还搞不清楚“envy”和“jealous”到底有什么区别!

Envy 和 Jealous 有什么区别?

You know something that doesn’t make sense? “I’m so jealous of you!!! Congratulations!!!”

That’s because jealous was used wrong here. What they probably meant was envious. So today, we’ll try to figure out the difference between envious and jealous, as well as how to use them properly.

Envy

Noun 名词

Verb 动词

Adjective 形容词

EnvyEnvyEnvious

We use “envy” when we want what someone else has. Such as, if you want your neighbor’s new car, you feel envy. To use “envy”, your sentence must have 2 people (you and someone else).

To use the adjective, remember to use the “be” verb (am, is, are, was, etc.) before “envious” and “of” (介词) after.

Examples:

You won the lottery? I envy (v.) you.

You won the lottery? I am envious (adjective) of you.

Meg envied (verb) Ethel after Ethel won the beauty contest.

Meg was full of envy (noun) after Ethel won the beauty contest.

Meg was envious (adjective) of Ethel after Ethel won the beauty contest.

Jealousy

Noun 名词

Verb 动词

Adjective 形容词

Jealousy--------Jealous

We use “jealous” when we are worried that someone’s trying to take what we have. Such as, if you see your neighbor flirting (调情) with your husband, you feel jealous.

To use “jealous”, your sentence must have 3 people (you, and two others). That’s why “jealous” is usually used between 3 people, like in lovers’ triangles. Like with “envious”, remember to use the “be” verb (am, is, are, was, etc.) before “jealous” and “of” (介词) after.

Examples:

My girlfriend chose you over me? I am raging with jealousy(noun)!

My girlfriend chose you over me? I am jealous of you. (adjective)

Meg was full of jealousy (noun) after realizing that Ethel stole her boyfriend.

Meg was jealous of Ethel after realizing that Ethel stole her boyfriend. (adjective)

帮你做个小总结

So you can feel envy about something you want but don’t have – like your coworkers promotion, but you only feel jealousy over something you have but are afraid of losing (like your boyfriend). Here’s a quick summary:
