This week we answer a question from Rafael. He asks,

本周我们回答拉斐尔提出的一个问题。他问道,

What's the difference between too and Very? Dear Rafael,

"too"和"very"有什么区别?亲爱的拉斐尔,

Thanks for asking this question. These words often cause problems for people who are learning English.

谢谢你提出这个问题。这两个词经常给学英语的人带来麻烦。

That is because translating them into your own language may not give you a complete understanding of how they are used. "Very" and "too" are both adverbs.

那是因为把这两个词翻译成你自己的语言可能无法让你完全理解它们的用法。"Very"和"too"都是副词。

They come before an adjective. The basic difference is that "very" emphasizes the word that follows it.

它们出现在形容词之前。根本区别是"very"强调跟在其后的单词。

"Too" before a word means there is more than what is wanted. You can see how this works clearly with the adjective "much" in these sentences:

"Too"放在一个单词之前指的是超出所想要的。你可以通过以下句子中的形容词"much"来清楚了解用法。

I love chocolate very much. I eat one piece of chocolate a day. He loves chocolate too much. He eats a whole box of chocolates every day.

我非常喜欢巧克力。我每天吃一块巧克力。他太喜欢巧克力了。他每天吃一整盒巧克力。

We use "very" to show there is a higher degree of some quality. It often appears in sentences with a? positive? meaning:

我们用"very"来表示某种特性的程度更高。它通常出现在具有肯定意义的句子中:

That is a very good movie. My dog is always very happy to see me.

那是一部很好的电影。我的狗狗总是非常高兴见到我。

On the other hand, "too" means there is more of the quality than you want. This shows a? negative? idea.

另一方面,"too"指的是某种特性超出你所想要的。它表明否定观点。

For example, That movie is too violent for me.

例如,那部电影对我来说太暴力了。

The main difference between "very" and "too" is that using "too" suggests that there is some problem. On a really hard day, you might come home and say:

"very"和"too"的主要区别在于,使用"too"是表明存在某个问题。辛苦一天之后,你回到家可能会说:

I am too tired to eat, so we should not go out for dinner. On a better day, you might say:

我太累了以致吃不下饭,所以我们不能出去吃晚饭。在情况好一些的一天,你可能会说:

I am very tired, but I can go out for dinner. Do you like Thai food?

我很累,但我可以出去吃晚饭。你喜欢泰国菜吗?

It has many spices. Someone who likes it would say:

它放很多香辛料。喜欢它的人会说:

I love Thai food: it is very spicy. Someone who does not like spices would say:

我喜欢泰国菜,它很辣。不喜欢香辛料的人会说:

Thai food is too spicy. And that's Ask a Teacher for this week.

泰国菜太辣了。以上就是本期《名师答疑》的全部内容。
