1. more than用在数词前，表示“超过，多于”，相当于over,如
He supervised and trained more than 400 volunteers.
他指导和培训了400多名志愿者。
He has been mugged more than once.
他已是不止一次被抢劫了。
It was the first time Jane and I had been apart for more than a few days
那是我第一次和简分开数日。
more than 9,000 men lie buried here.

2. more than后接名词、动名词，表示“不仅仅是，不只是”，相当于over\not just\not only,如：
Marx's work was more than a critical study of capitalist production.

Wood is used for more than building.木头不仅仅用于建筑。
Hibernation is more than sleep.冬眠不仅仅是睡眠。

3. more than后接动词、形容词、副词、介词短语，相当于very\much\especially,表示：很，非常，十分，更加等：
I’m more than delighted to tell you what I did to accumulate knowledge.我非常高兴和你们分享我是如何积累知识的。
You don't have to join in; there are more than enough people on the job already.
人够多了，您就不用插手了。
I’m more than glad to hear the good new.我非常高兴听到那个好消息。
They were more than happy to see us come back from the expedition. 看到我们远征而归，他们异常高兴。
I was more than surprised to see the lion standing at the body. 看到那头狮子站在尸体旁边，我非常惊讶。
more than与动词连用，对动词起着加强语气的作用。例如：
Repeated advertising will more than increase product sales. 多次做广告意味着增加产品的销售。
His progress in English learning more than encouraged him to learn the subject well. 在英语学习方面的进步激励他学好这门课程。
4. more than后接从句，相当于not only, over,含义是：不仅仅，超过，难以，简直不能；从句中常常有can\could,如：
The itching was almost more than he could stand.
他痒得几乎忍不住了。
I love you more than I can say.我爱你心口难开。（我爱你超过我能说的程度。我爱你已经超过任何语言能够表达的程度。我爱你到了任何言语都是苍白无力的地步。）
From start to finish he believed in me, often more than I did myself.
他自始至终都相信我，而且时常超过我对自己的信任。
The cold was more than the children could bear.天气冷的超过孩子们的忍受。
The hurt and pain was more than he could stand.他无法承受那些伤害和痛苦。

The beauty of the mountainous country is more than I can describe. 我难以描述那个山村的美丽。 This problem is more than a child like Jack can settle. 这一问题超出了像杰克这样的小孩的解决能力。
5. more than的否定形式：no more than(接名词、数词)=only；not more than(名词、数词)=at most,no less than,至多，不超过，不含嫌少的含义：
We’ve learned no more than 10 lessons this term.
这学期我们只学了10篇课文。（含有嫌少等意思）
We’ve learned no more than 10 lessons his term.
这学期我们至多学了10篇课文。（不含嫌少的意思）
All his education added up to no more than one year. 他接受的所有的学校教育只有一年。 Their new flat has no more than 60 square metres. 他们的新居只有60平方米。
Lying on the ground was a peasant boy of not more than seventeen. 躺在地上的那个农家男孩最多十七岁。
no more than和no less than前者强调少、后者强调多，如：
He has no more than￥100.这句话的意思：他只有100元。显然是强调少。
而no less than是强调多时使用的，当表达数量多达某个数值时就要用它。
例如：There were no less than fifty wounded.
受伤者多达50人。
It's no more than a platitude.
无非是老生常谈。
Even if the bill were approved, it would be no more than a stopgap measure.
即使议案获得批准，它也只不过是个临时措施。
It's true we were acquainted, but no more than that.
我们的确认识，但仅此而已。

它本来应该是一个不超过12名女性的封闭的小圈子。

not more than和not less than前者是至多、后者是至少
这两个不像前面第一类那样主观上强调多或者少，只是用来表达一个上限和下限的数值范围而已。
not more than就是“不超过” ，“不多于”，跟它直接表达的含义一致，汉语角度可以说是“小于等于”。
例如：It is not more than5 kilograms.
它不会超过5公斤。
这里只强调了最多5公斤，没有主观上强调多或者少的意思。
not less than就是“不少于”，也跟它直接表达的含义一致，非常好记。
例如：The audience was not less than 5 thousand.观众不低于5000人。5000就是最低数量。not less than也就是汉语中的“大于等于”。
6. 把more和than拆开用，more A than B,强调A弱化B.
The girl is more wise than beautiful . 这个女孩与其说漂亮，不如说聪明。强调了前者、弱化了后者。
She is more a singer than a dancer.翻译成：与其说她是舞蹈家，不如说是个歌手。强调前者、弱化后者。
