今天我们要聊的这个英语表达叫white elephant，那么什么是“白色大象”呢？在回答这个问题之前，一如既往，让我们先来看一个英文例句：
Jack: Hey! Mary. Did you buy a new car?
经过查证，根据柯林斯英汉双解字典的解释，我们可以用英文来表述。white elephant: If you describe something as a white elephant, you mean that it is a waste of money because it is completely useless. 它的意思就是我们中文里说的：昂贵却无用的东西。
另外，除了用white elephant来表达昂贵却无用的东西。我们还可以说useless, unnecessary, bootless或者futile，这些都是可以的。
Tommy建议根据实际情况来选择词汇，如果是比较正式、非朋友间的谈话，就不要用white elephant了，但如果听到别说white elephant，你也不要反应不过来喔！
那么我们该如何来理解这个词组呢？用英文来说就是：The origin of “white elephant” is from the story that the kings of Siam暹罗(泰国 Thailand 的旧称)） gave such animals as a gift to courtiers they disliked, in order to ruin the recipient by the great expense incurred in maintaining the animal.
用中文来说就是：暹罗(泰国 Thailand 的旧称)的国王把大象送给敌国，因为大象吃得多很难饲养，所以他想通过大象吃垮这个国家。
这也太天真了吧！
总结，a white elephant=useless and expensive or unnecessary stuff 表示无用却昂贵。
