last year 意为“去年”，而 in the last year 意为“在过去的一年里”，乍看它们有点一样，但实际上意思不一样，以致于与它们连用的时态也不一样。那么 in the past year 呢，它是不是跟 in the last year 一样呢？
一、last year 指今年之前的一个日历年，比如现在是 2021，那么 last year 就是 2020，是一个纯粹地表示过去的且确定的时间，所以它跟一般过去时连用，也就是说它是一般过去时的信号词，例如：
I went to Hawaii last year.
我去年去了夏威夷。
The house came on the market last year.
这栋房屋去年就上市了。
The new wing was built onto the hospital last year.
医院的新翼楼是去年增建的。
二、in the last year 指的是今天之前的365天，所以它不是一个具体的时间，它表示从过去365天中的某个时间点到现在的一个时间段，所以它跟现在完成时连用，例如：
I have been to Hawaii in the last year.
去年我去过夏威夷。
Mortgage defaults have risen in the last year.
按揭借款违约在近一年里呈上升趋势。
I have seen that movie six times in the last year.
去年一整年我看了六次那部电影。
三、last 和 past 的区别
当谈论一段时间，且这段时间是某项活动或事件的最后阶段时，使用 last，当谈论最近刚刚过去的一段时间时，我们用 past，例如：
1. 我已经等你两个小时了。
✔: I’ve been waiting for you for the past two hours.
❌: I’ve been waiting for you for the last two hours.
解析：如果你说的是等待某人，那么使用 the past two hours （过去两个小时）是正确的，因为你指的是刚刚过去的一段时间（两个小时），而不能用 the last two hours（最后两个小时），因为这不是任何活动或事件的一个时间阶段，也即没有类似开始、中间、最后的几个阶段。事实上，这里唯一的活动或事件就是等两个小时。换句话说，这两个小时是你等待朋友的一段时间。
2. 虽然他一开始很慢，但在最后三场中他想方设法赶上了进球。
✔: Although he started off really slow, he managed to catch up with the goal in the last three sessions.
❌: Although he started off really slow, he managed to catch up with the goal in the past three sessions.
解析：此句描述的是一场足球赛，虽然在开场节奏很慢，但是在最后三场还是进了球，强调是在最后的几个阶段，所以用 the last three sessions.
在描述诸如什么生活、生命或婚姻等的最后几年里，此时只能用 in the last (#) year(s)，而不能用 in the past (#) year(s)，其中 # 表示具体的数字，此时连用的时态不一定是现在完成时，可能是一般过去时、过去完成时或现在完成时，取决于说话的时间点，例如：
In his last three years, he wrote two biographies.
在他最后的三年里，他写了两本传记。
但是相对于现在这个时间点，in the last year 和 in the past year 都表示过去的12个月，都与现在完成时连用，意为”在过去的一年里“例如：
Real wage costs have risen by 10% in the last/past year.
在过去的一年里，实际工资成本增加了10%。
The shares have plummeted from 130p to 2.25p in the last/past year.
在过去的一年里，股票已从130便士暴跌到2.25便士。
Traffic accidents have increased by five percent in the last/past year.
去年交通事故增加了5%。
