Toothache
—To the Tune of Riverside Fairy
By CAI Shiping
Tr. ZHAO Yanchun
I suffered a lot from toothache at the age of fifty, sleepless all night. So sad, I recall the “Three Years (1959-1961) of Natural Disasters” in China. One spring, Mother took me to Dongting Lake to dig chicken rice to quench our hunger. (Chicken rice is a kind of potherb with small yellow flowers, rooted in the mud of a lake. It can be eaten raw or cooked after being peeled, and it tastes sweet and slightly astringent.) I bit the new roots with my young teeth, and their aroma is still on my taste buds.
Mother and I reached the lake hand in hand,
Blossoms yellow, bed green and soil black.
Grassroots thick or thin, leaves biting, alack.
Chicken rice juice stuck to my lips,
A sense of spring, what a sweet smack!
Fifty years through slashes of wind and rain,
My teeth not solid, beard stiffly black.
How I wish Mum slept well, no fret, no hack!
The frosty sky bullies dried leaves;
The morning cold does my soul rack.
