On Oct 7, folk singer Jiang Dunhao of team Wang Feng narrowly beat Singapore competitor Xiang Yang to win the championship of Sing! China (《中国新歌声》). However, many social media users saw it as an unconvincing win. In the last round, Jiang won 47 votes from judges while Xiang got 45, but it was later revealed that the jury consisted of 81 members. Producers of the singing competition denied there was anything untoward going on and owed the deviation between the total number of votes and the number of judges to a possible failure of the voting equipment. Despite the explanation, the reason is still seen as unconvincing by most viewers.

Singer Zhang Liangying announced on Oct 8 she’s to marry her long-time boyfriend Feng Ke, 51, who’s also the CEO of her record company, on Nov 16. But the next day, Zhang’s mother put her foot down and issued an open letter to show her opposition to the union. She listed several wrongs Feng had done to her and her daughter, including hiding a previous marriage during his and Zhang’s first few years together, as well as allegedly cheating Zhang out of shares in their company. Feng later responded calling the incident amisunderstanding, and Zhang called on web users to leave the couple alone to deal with their family business in private.

The cynical and deceitful character An Lingrong, in the 2011 hit drama The Legend of Zhen Huan (《甄嬛传》), made actress Tao Xinran famous but also brought her criticism. Some have even left malicious comments about her new-born daughter, saying she will not come to a good end. On Oct 8, Tao took to micro blogs to fight back. “I don’t care if you react to me because of my characters. But cursing my daughter, that’s beyond my bottom line.”

Guo Jingming’s new computer animated motion capture fantasy film L.O.R.D.– Legend of Ravaging Dynasties (《爵迹》), which was released on Sept 30, could be called a failure, both at the box office and in the eyes of critics. Many are still choosing to boycott Guo’s work following his plagiarism scandal, despite his controversial novel being released over 12 years ago. At a press conference in Shanghai on Oct 3, a devastated Guo cried to reporters, “Do I do everything wrong just because I’m Guo Jingming? Will you stop abusing L.O.R.D. only if I’m dead?”
