Art Nouveau was popularized in Brussels by the architect Victor Horta at the end of the 19th century with the completion of his first masterpiece: the Hôtel Tassel.

Following this, many other architects started designing unique private houses and public buildings, transforming Brussel’s cityscape.

This art style finds a lot of inspiration in nature with references to both flora and fauna and encompasses much more than architecture alone: it also revolves around all aspects of daily life such as furniture, fashion and design.

2023 marks the 130th anniversary of the emergence of Art Nouveau.

To mark this occasion, the Brussels Regional Government will organise various national and international events including but not limited to temporary exhibitions, guided city tours and the re-opening of buildings (such as the long-closed Hôtel Hannon), conferences and site visits. The project will also highlight contemporary social issues like sustainability, inclusion and innovation among others.
