紫砂壶是中国一种传统茶壶，相传源自宋代至明武宗正德年间。制作紫砂壶的材料是紫砂矿土，由紫泥、绿泥和红泥三种基本泥构成，统称紫砂泥。因产自江苏宜兴，又称宜兴紫砂。好茶者认为，用紫砂壶泡茶，茶味隽永醇厚，紫砂壶因其特殊的双气孔结构，能吸收茶香茶色茶味，因此茶壶使用越久，泡出来的茶越香越醇。因紫砂壶吸色吸味的特点，有“一壶不侍二茶”之说。
蒋蓉（1919年~2008年2月19日），别号林凤，江苏省宜兴市川埠潜洛人。1995年被授予“中国工艺美术大师”称号。 蒋蓉作品曾在全国工业会议上评为“特等奖”，并为周恩来总理出访东南亚等国家制作礼品。

南瓜壶 材质为紫红泥调砂，湿润细腻。造型扁平，壶身作五瓣南瓜形，腹部圆鼓，向上渐收敛而成小圆口。流似卷状瓜叶，把作成随意弯扭的瓜蔓，藤蔓贴饰壶身，生出绿叶，以虫为钮，身为瓜形。整体浑然天成，自然有致。整体造型以视觉上的回顾转向来表白自然微型机的变化和造型上的整体感，趣味性与艺术性皆臻妙境。
紫砂壶是纯手工制作，所以一把好壶没有几十年经验是做不好的，紫砂不像玉石那样可以精雕细琢，他就像是要把泥玩出艺术这一点是非常难得，就目前宜兴已经开采不出紫砂了，都是一些泥俗称紫砂泥，与紫砂是有区别的，紫砂中最难的就是做仿生题材的，这件南瓜壶壶盖与壶身完美的结合，上面的昆虫则颜色鲜艳形成明显的色差，整件作品工艺精湛十分难得，是蒋蓉的代表作品。
