Some time ago, an interesting discovery was made by archaeologists on the Aegean island of Kea. An American team explores a temple which stands in an ancient city on the promontory of Ayia Irini. The city at one time must have been prosperous, for it enjoyed a high level of civilization. Houses -- often three storeys high -- were built of stone. They had large rooms with beautifully decorated walls. The city was even equipped with a drained system, for a great many clay pipes were found beneath the narrow streets.

Some time ago, an interesting discovery was made by archaeologists on the Aegean island of Kea.

He left Beijing some time ago. It will take me some time to read this book.

Let’s have dinner together sometime(one day) next week.

When will I get married? This year, next year, some time, never?

He was sometime professor of physics at the university.

Many discoveries about the heavenly bodies have been made recently.

They made a new discovery in astronomy.

Dr. Fleming made his discovery of penicillin in1928.

The city at one time must have been prosperous, for it enjoyed a high level of civilization. Houses ----often three storeys high----were built of stone. They had largr rooms with beautifullly decorated walls. The city was even equipped with a drainage system, for a great mnay clay pipes were found beneath the narrow streets.

At one time:一度曾经 at a time每次,例如:

At one time we met every day.

Don’t ask so many questions at a time.

Houses -- often three storeys high -- were built of stone.

We’ll be arriving on Monday morning --- at least, I think so.

was even equipped with配备有,装备有(设备);具有(知识、能力等),如:

The army was equipped with up-to-date weapons.

He was equipped with sufficient knowledge for this job.

Soldiers equipped with rocket launchers

A car equipped with air conditioning

The temple which the archaeologists explored was used as a place of worship from the fifteenth century B.C. until Roman times. In the most sacred room of the temple, clay fragments of fifteen statues were found. Each of these represented a goddess and had, at one time, been painted. The body of one statue was found among remains dating from the fifteenth century B.C. Its missing head happened to be among remians of the fifteenth century B.C. This head must have been found in Classical times and carefully preserved. It was very old and precious even then. When the archaeologists reconstructed the fragments, they were amazed to find that the goddess turned out to be a very modern-looking woman. She stood three feet high and her hands rested on her hips. She was wearing a full-length skirt which swept the ground. Despite her great age, she was very graceful indeed, but, so far, the archaeologists have been unable to discover her identity.

The temple which the archaeologists explored was used as a place of worship from the fifteenth century B.C. until Roman times.

除动词use 以外,还有若干动词可以用于此结构,如:consider..as, describe..as, recognize.. as, regard..as, see..as, see...as, treat..as 这样的结构常用来表达如何看待、使用、描述某人或者某物,如:

I see you as a basically kind person

She described her attacker as a tall dark man with a beard.

(3)此处as为介词,后面可以使用动名词结构(通常为being),如:i don’t regard you as being dangerous.

He didn’t impress me as/being intelligent.

In the most sacred room of the temple

On a hill in front of them stood a great castle. /round the corner walked a large policeman.

Here in China we don’t allow any form of discrimination against women.

There are only a few people in the hall. On the right in front of the counter you could see a young lady speaking something to the reception personal.

The body of one statue was found among remains dating from the fifteenth century B.C. Its missing head happened to be among remians of the fifteenth century B.C. This head must have been found in Classical times and carefully preserved. It was very old and precious even then.

这个词必须使用复数形式,但其动词有时可用单数形式,如:the remains of the supper were/was taken away.

Date from追溯,始于,这个动词无被动形式,如:these stones dated from the days of the dinosaurs.

Its missing head happened to be...happen to碰巧恰巧。 I happened to be there when he arrived. If anything happens to him, phones us as soon as possible.

When the archaeologists reconstructed the fragments, they were amazed to find that the goddess turned out to be a very modern-looking woman. She stood three feet high and her hands rested on her hips. She was wearing a full-length skirt which swept the ground. Despite her great age, she was very graceful indeed, but, so far, the archaeologists have been unable to discover her identity.

turned out to be原来是,证明是,结果是,后来成为。

He said he was a doctor; but upon close investigation, he turned out (to be )a quack.

The bride was wearing a white dress and carring a bouquet of lilies. The bridegroom was trembling and looking pale. Suddenly a man stood up at the back of the church,’Listen,’ he said.

/Columbus discovered America.

Radium and penicillin were discovered.
