介词是易变的东西，它们通常只由几个字母组成，但这些字母足以对句子产生深远的影响。本文将探讨你应该使用 at night 还是 in the night，以及这两种形式的含义。
我们常说 in the morning，in the afternoon 和 in the evening，但提到 night 时却常用 at night；其实，at night 是一个习惯用语，许多以英语为母语的人也不知道为什么 at night 比 in the night 更常用，但是这两者都是正确的表达方式。
传统地讲，morning，afternoon 或 evening 都是一天中的部分时间段，通常都有一个特定的（specific）时间段，如 morning 是从 sunrise 或 midnight 到 noon，afternoon 是从 noon 到 sunset，evening 是从 sunset 或 the evening meal 到 bedtime，而且在这些不同的时间段，人们都有不同的活动。
纵观介词 in 的用法，我们知道，in 可以表示在特定的某个时间段内，如 in May 表示从 May 1st 到 May 31th 这个时间段，in 2005 表示从 2005 年 Jan. 到 2005 年 Dec. 这个时间段，还有如 in spring/summer 等等；那么从特定时间段这个角度出发的话，in the morning，in the afternoon 和 in the evening 中的 in 表示的都是在特定的一个时间段内。
相对于 morning，afternoon 和 evening 而言，night 通常是指 late in the evening 和 early in the morning，或从 dusk 到 dawn，人们大部门时间都是在睡觉，没有其他的活动，因此在古代，当人们使用 at night 时，是把 night 当作一天中的一个时间点（一个没有活动的一个时间片段），这跟介词 at 修饰时间的用法接上轨。
介词 at 是表示在某时间或时刻的特定介词，而且通常具有一定的灵活性，如 at 2 o'clock 暗示开始于两点钟并持续一段灵活的时间，那么 at night 表示一天中的天黑的时刻，例如：
He can't always sleep deeply at night due to the interval of noise coming from nowhere.
他晚上总是睡不着觉，因为不时有从哪儿传来的噪音。
I have a routine at night that helps me to calm down. I recommend you try one out as well.

这个就像一天中的其他时间点也是用 at 修饰一样，如 at noon，at dawn，at dinner，at midnight 或 at 5:00 等，其中 at dinner 涉及的是吃晚餐的时刻，那么晚餐可以吃半个小时，也可以吃一个小时，只是这个时间段被当作一个时间点，就像 night 被当作一天中的一个时间的原理是一样的。
当然使用 at 修饰时间也有一个例外，那就是 at 可以修饰模糊的时间段，如 at that time，at breakfast time，at Easter 或 at the weekend 等等。

We're going to hunt for a new house at the weekend.
我们打算在周末找一栋新房子。
注意在美式英语中用 on the weekend，而不是 at the weekend。其实，修饰时间时 at 表示某时间跟它修饰时间的用法类似，通常用 at 修饰的地点或位置被当作一个点，小到 table，大到 store，都可以用 at 来修饰，此时的 table 或 store 被说话者当作一个点，这个就像 noon 或 night 被当作一个时间点一样，例如：
The child was sitting at the table dismantling his new toy.
那孩子正坐在桌子旁拆卸他的新玩具。
We came across each other at the big department store yesterday and had a long chat.
昨天我们在大百货公司碰见了对方，聊了很久。
而 in the night 表示某个特定 night 中的一个时间，通常是谈及已经发生的事情，主要用于过去式，例如：
The temperature fell sharply in the night.
夜间温度陡降。
There were some sounds in the night that led me to believe I wasn’t alone.
夜里有一些声音让我相信我并不是一个人。
