单词quack有两个常见意思,一指“嘎嘎”(鸭叫声),是个拟声词,模仿鸭子的叫声;另一个指“庸医、江湖骗子”,是个缩略词,在16世纪时写作quacksalver,借自早期荷兰语。

quacksalver意思是“庸医”或“江湖医生”,这些江湖郎中在沿街叫卖药膏(salve)及“万应药”等假药时,大吹大擂的样子很像鸭子在嘎嘎叫(quack),所以被形象地称为quacksalver。后来quacksalver被缩略为quack。
