由于英汉两种语言具有各自的特点，其表达方式无法一一对等。为了更好地传达原文的思想内容，使译文更符合汉语的表达习惯，翻译时可根据需要进行必要的词类转换。词类转换主要有以下几种情况：
一、转译成动词
根据需要，英语中的名词、形容词、副词、动名词和介词等在翻译时可以转换成汉语的动词。英语中名词可以转换成动词的主要是一些含有动作意义的名词, 如 attempt, use, glance, sight, support, love flow；或是由动词派生出来的名词，如arrangement, objection , acquaintance, application, operation, arrival 等。请看例句：
The flow of electrons is from the negative zinc plate to the positive copper plate.电子从负的锌极流向正的铜极。
The operation of a computer needs some knowledge of English.操作电脑需要一些英文知识。
I have no objection to your plan.我不反对你们的计划。
一些表示心理活动、心理状态和含有动词意义的形容词常常可以转译成汉语的动词。这些形容词常见的有sure, aware,ignorant, certain, glad, content, careful, cautious, familiar, available,fond, loyal 等, 如:
If · extremely low-cost power were ever to become available from large nuclear power plants, electrolytic hydrogen would become competitive.如果能从大型核电站获得成本极低的电力，电解氢的竞争能力就会增强。
The students are afraid that this chemical reaction will take place with great violence.学生们担尤，这个化学反应会以很强烈的方式发生。
We should be aware of the whole circumstances.我们应该摸清全部情况。
英语中许多介词和副词在古英语中曾是动词。因此，在翻译时常常可以将它们转译成汉语的动词，尤其当它们在英文句子中作表语或状语时。如：
He is for the plan, but I am against it.他费脯这个计划，但我反对。
Open the valve to let air in.找开阀门，让空气进入。
In any machine input work equals output work plus work done against friction.任何机器的输人功，都等于输出功加上克服摩擦所做的功。
英语句子中的动名词也常常可以转译成汉语的动词。如：
Changing the resistance is a method of controlling the flow of current.改变电阻是控制电路中电流流动的一种方法。
This arrangement has the advantage of there being no electrical connection between the d. c. circuit and the a. c. circuit.这种装置的优点是在直流电路和交流电路之间没有电的联系。
The causes of these failures are far from cleaning.这些故障的原因远没有弄清楚。
