LR挑了最短的一篇，发现了这个很有意思的词：Xenophobia.

Xenophobia 一词来源自希腊语“ξένος （xenos）”，意指“外来者”；“φόβος（phobos）”，意指“恐惧、隔离”。
什么意思呢？
朗文给的解释是：strong fear or dislike of people from other countries 惧外心理，仇外心理〔对外国人的强烈恐惧或憎恨〕
Wikipedia 的英文解释是，
Xenophobia is the fear and distrust of that which is perceived to be foreign or strange.
Wikipedia 对应的中文页面将该词条指向了「仇外」一词，不仅仅是针对外国人，还包括对外族人、外地人甚至是陌生人的恐惧或不满而产生的排斥心理。

○ ups and downs 字面上是“上上下下”，意思就是“起起伏伏，兴衰，沉浮”，alternating periods of good and bad fortune, high and low spirits, etc 举个，Like most married couples we've had our ups and downs, but life's like that. 和所有已婚夫妇一样，我们也经历过沉浮波折，但生活就是如此。

○ asylum：/əˈsaɪləm/ 意思是“（政治）避难，（政治）庇护”(uprotection given to someone by a government because they have escaped from fighting or political trouble in their own country) 例如，申请/寻求/获得庇护apply for/seek/be granted asylum，文中的“asylum-seeker”就是指“寻求避难者”那些政治难民「political refugees」。
此外，asylum 还有一个意思是“精神病院，疯人院”，可以说是「mental hospital」或者「psychiatric hospital」。

○ nuanced 这里是形容词，是由它的名词 nuance 派生而来，表示“（在外表、意义、感觉、声音等上）有细微差別的”。Opinion polls tell a more nuanced stor 一句的意思就是从民意调查中我们可以发现一些很微妙的结果。

○ 什么是 Eurobarometer？
其中的 barometer 是气象中的“气压计，晴雨表”的意思，也可以引申为“〔反映经济、社会、政治等事物变化的〕晴雨表/指标/标志”。而 Eurobarometer 实际上就是欧盟每几年会开展的一系列民意调查。

有意思是的，欧洲西、南部的国家，和东、北部国家给出的调查结果简直是两个极端(pull in opposite directions)，2014年11月到2018年3月，前者对待移民和难民的态度开始慢慢变得友好了(friendlier)，而后者则越来不友善(more hostile).
Western and southern European countries have generally become friendlier to foreigners, while northern and eastern countries have grown more hostile.
○ hostile 就是 friendly的反义词，表示“怀有敌意的，敌对的，不友善的”(angry and deliberately unfriendly towards someone, and ready to argue with them)，上面的两方面对比句型，看似简单，你自己写的时候会这么处理吗？：D
