Letters sent to scrap yard
To fight a lawsuit in the special land of today's China, according to Zhou Xinghe, each lawsuit is no less arduous than climbing Mount Qomolangma.
After the company's production and operation basically resumed, Zhou Xinghe faced the behavior that infringed his company's interests unbridled, and he was really angry and could not bear it any more. He was well aware that the human, material, financial, and mental costs for the lawsuit as well as the petty annoyances could not be simply calculated in terms of money. At the very least, even if winning the lawsuit, it would be at a high price! Moreover, Zhou Xinghe felt that he should spend most of his time and energy on inventing and promoting the products and creating the material and spiritual wealth for the society - but they had no choice.
In May of 2002, the office director of Xinghe Company suddenly received an anonymous telephone call saying that almost all the business letters they sent to the post office were not marked with the post office postmark and had been sold as the waste paper.
"How is that possible?" Zhou Xinghe listened to Director Xu's report, and did not believe it, "I'm afraid it may be the post office internal staff who have opinions on their leader, and deliberately discredit their leader in the outside."
"No, I don't think so. The man called in a very positive tone, pledging by his integrity and work ethics."
"Well..." Director Xu hesitated for a moment, "Shall I ask someone to check it?"
"There is no need for that." Zhou xinghe said confidently, "It is against the law to open and destroy other’s letters privately. They are the post offices run by the state. They don't have to do that thing, and we don't have to check."
"That’s...... all right." Director Xu had to nod his head in response.
A few months later, however, it became clear that the anonymous call might not be false. At this time, Zhou Xinghe was also a little suspicious to the matter reflected by the office director. That day, he called Director Xu to his office.
"Have you calculated how many business letters we sent through the post office this year?" Zhou Xinghe asked.
"We have a detailed record. Since April 8, 2002, 2,096,110 pieces have been sent through the post office, and 400,000 printed pieces have not to be sent out yet." Replied the office director.
"That's strange." Zhou Xinghe thought for a while and said slowly, "Most of these business letters are the picture albums and newspapers printed in color. We spent more than 10 million yuan just for printing. More than 4 million yuan has been spent on the wages of more than 100 letter stuffing personnel, envelope printing and postage. Since more than 2 million letters have been delivered, why is it so unusual this year that there has been so little feedback from the clients and, in recent days, almost no client comes to visit us?"
Well, the present abnormal situation made Zhou Xinghe feeling a little suspicious. According to the experience in previous years, after these letters were sent out, it should receive at least 50 or 60 consulting calls from all over the country every day, and receive more than 10 batches of clients who come to visit and investigate the company and negotiate for the business every day. But this year's letter quantity was doubled comparing with previous year, why it was out of normal conditions now?
"I still wonder whether the post office really sold our letter as the waste paper, or they never sent it at all!" Director Xu talked the old story again.
"As usual, this will not happen! But now the situation is questionable."
In previous years, the company's letters were sent through Chengdu Post Office, and their service quality was impeccable. Due to the separation of postal services and telecommunications in recent years, the competition in postal services had become increasingly fierce. Because the annual volume of business letters of Xinghe Company was huge, which was more than 2 million pieces a year, it naturally became the object of each post office. In March of this year, a city post office found Xinghe Company through a friend, willing to send the letters in a lower price than Chengdu Post Office. For the sake of his friend's face, Zhou Xinghe transferred his letter business from Chengdu to this post office. At the beginning, they also send the company staff to understand the condition in the post office, and according to report, their work was still done well!
Zhou Xinghe thought about it for a while and said to Director Xu, "Well, you should call up at least one or two hundred familiar clients and ask them if they have received our letters. If most of them didn't get the letter, you do have to send someone to track it down."
"Yes, sir." Director Xu promised.
"Come back!" Zhou Xinghe called the director back and told him, "You should discuss with Deputy General Manager Zhou. For the client feedback information and the whereabouts of the tracked letters, you should keep the conclusive evidence."
"I know that."
What followed proved it was not just a rumor. Xinghe Company called for several days and asked about over a hundred clients, but almost no one received the business letter from them.
"That's strange. The problem might have happened in the post office." Zhou Xinghe heard and became more confused. He thought for a while, and said to the company deputy general manager, "So, you're sending our staff around the post office 24 hours a day to see where the letters go."
Where there is a will, there is a way. Zhou Xinghe and his staff checked carefully, and finally found a national rare scandal of damaging mails in a post office!
On the night of October 3, 2002, there was no moon or star.
These days, it was the National Day Holiday; according to Zhou Xinghe’s arrangement, Xinghe Company’s staff Zhang and Feng took turns to watch at the post office. Over 8 o'clock of this evening, they suddenly found five tricycles, containing a number of bulging sacks, staggered out from the post office gate. Behind the tricycle, followed by two men and two women talking and laughing. Zhang recognized, those people rided the tricycles were the junkman always around the post office; those men and women, on the other hand, were unfamiliar. The two faithful staffs, as usual, came forward to check it secretly. It shocked them this time! From the opening of the sack, which had not been completely sealed, they saw a bundle of familiar letters and publicity materials - they rubbed their eyes, and that was the letters and publicity materials Xinghe Company had given to the post office for mail!
Where are these tricycles going to haul the damaged letters? The two staff did not alert other people. They quietly followed the tricycles, watching them turning from the street to the alley, and zigzagging along. After about half an hour, they came to a very quiet place. There were people waiting for them in front of a few shabby houses.
After a few brief conversations, the men and women instructed the junkmen to unload the sacks. More than a dozen sacks were open, and Zhang and Feng hiding in the dark, saw the inside was binded stacks of letters and publicity materials! Then, the two men weighed the papers by themselves and left the scrap yard after the boss paid over 750 yuan.
"Mr. Zhou?" Zhang truthfully reported what they saw with a mobile phone to Zhou Xinghe, "The post office took our company's business letters, to the scrap yard to sell with tricycles!"
"Did you really see that?" At this point, Zhou Xinghe and his family were on holiday, and when he heard the report of his staff, he could not believe and aske again.
"Yes, they were transported by five tricycles, accompanied by 2 men and 2 women." Zhang said firmly, "This scrap yard is the 12th salesroom of the salvage station."
"Damn it, there's no law?!" Zhou Xinghe, who never said rude words, cursed in his heart, but he calmed down immediately and told the two staff, "Don't alert them now. One of you keeps an eye on the scrap yard and the other on the post office. We will come to deal with it now!"
