Describe a thing you did to learn another language
You should say:
- what language you learned
- What you did
- How it helped you learn the language
And how you felt about it
The one thing I often do when it comes to learning another language is transcribing.
This method helped me to learn English faster and now I’m using it to learn Spanish.
Basically, it’s a four-step process. But before I get it going, there are tools I need to prepare: pens of different colors, a notebook, and an audio.
In the first step, I find an audio of a conversation or an article, usually from the textbook or workbook available, and try to write down everything I hear with a black pen, word by word, sentence by sentence.
In the second step, I use a pen of a different color, for instance, a blue one, to fill in the gaps from Step One. For difficult words and sentences, I listen to them over and over again in order to write as much down as possible. Usually, if I stumble over some words, which is often, it’ll be either words I’m unfamiliar with or linking words, like conjunctions. For instance, in Spanish “no está mal” appears to me to be one word, yet they are actually three words.
For the third step, I’ll first check my transcription with the original text and find out what and why I missed some words, after which I’ll play the audio again and follow along with it reading the transcript. I think in this case, ‘imitate’ is the word for it, sentence by sentence. I imitate the pronunciation and intonation.
And in the last step, I’ll read it again in its entirety without the audio and record myself doing it.
Depending on the length and difficulty of the audio material, on average, the transcription process can take me up to 2 hours.
Learning a language other than your own can be tough. And this transcribing approach might seem ‘slow’ and painful to some people, but for me, it is a tough ‘shortcut’ yet I enjoy it. There are indeed times when I can only write down one-third or even one-fourth of a piece and then I’ll feel extremely depressed, but after checking every word and imitating and recording it, the article begins to look a lot easier to read and understand, and that gives me a great deal of satisfaction.
