在学英语的过程中，经常会出现这样一种情况，每个单词都是认识的，但是放在一起就不知道说话者想表达的意思是什么。
如果出现这样的情况，同学们就要引起注意了，在英语中并不是所有的单词都是字对字的翻译。
通过以下的例子，同学们看看能理解多少：
1. off the table
off 指离开，很容易直译为“离开桌子”，但其实应理解为“不予讨论，不予考虑”。
e.g. I wouldn’t wait too long to accept the offer.
- It might be off the table before you know it.
2. butter up someone
butter 指黄油，这里用作动词，所以会被误认为“给某人涂黄油”，显然是不正确的。
应理解为“奉承，讨好某人”
e.g. If you butter up your father, he may help you.
3. grab a bite
grab 指抓，不是抓着咬一口。应理解为“随便吃点，垫垫肚子“。
e.g. I don’t have so much time, so let’s grab a bite.
4. your call
不是“你的电话”。应理解为“你说了算”。
e.g. I don’t really care where we go. It’s your call.
5. hear me out
不是“出去听我说”，应为“听我说”。
e.g. Just hear me out.
6. You know what
其实就是一个口头禅“你知道吗？”，并不是向听众真的提问，所以听众也无需回答。
e.g. You know what, Alice got the first place.
7. get out of hand
不是“从手中拿走”，而是get out of control，“失控”。
e.g. Listen, this is totally getting out of hand! Okay?
8. stay out of the way
并不是大家理解的“待在路的外面”，而是“别挡道，别碍事”。
e.g. – Do you want me to call?
--No, I’ll do it. You just stick to your job.
-- what is your job?
--Staying out of the way.
9. someone’s wasted
同学们可不能翻译成“她被浪费了”，它等同于totally drunk，“烂醉如泥”。
e.g. – What’s going on? Phil’s pissed.
-- Monica’s wasted.
10. can’t help doing
不是“不能够帮助做…”，而是“忍不住，情不自禁”。
e.g. I just can’t help laughing when I see her.
