语篇等级:6 话题:生活方式与态度

Every morning, Mauro Morandi woke up to the sea view. Lost in nature, he had lived alone for more than 30 years at his house, a former second world war shelter on Budelli, the Mediterranean island. But more than three months has passed since Morandi, a former PE teacher from northern Italy, was forced to leave Budelli, where he had come to know every rock, tree and animal. Now the 82-year-old is adjusting to life in a one-bedroom apartment next to a shop, surrounded by neighbors. Speaking from his new home, Morandi said: “I became so used to the silence. Now continuous noises distract me so much that I don’t have time to think.” Morandi had always dreamed of living on an island. Tired by politics and other aspects of society, in 1989 he decided to set sail for Polynesia. But his journey to the South Pacific forced him to land in La Maddalena. He soon realized his paradise was much closer to home. Luckily, the island’s caretaker was about to retire, so Morandi abandoned his trip, sold the boat and took over the role. For the next two decades he guarded Budelli without trouble, clearing its paths, keeping its beaches clean and teaching summer day-visitors about its ecosystem. Food was delivered to him by boat from La Maddalena, and a homemade solar system powered his lights and internet connection. During winter, when there were no visitors, he spent his days collecting firewood, reading and sleeping. Morandi’s life continued in the same way until the private company that owned the island went bankrupt (破产). In 2016, the island was put back into public hands. This year, the authorities planned to turn Budelli into a centre for environmental education and forced him to go. So Morandi’s experience of Budelli was over and he accepted that it was time to leave Budelli considering his old age.
