It’s also a bit tougher than people think to find guys who can do that while also being 6-foot-7 with long arms and shooting 38 percent from 3 (as Finney-Smith has done over the last four years of his career on over 1,200 attempts). Finney-Smith doesn’t take much value off the floor on offense acting as a floor spacer who doesn’t need a ton of possessions while also adding a ton of value on defense. This season, only six perimeter players have a usage rate of 13 or less while still being positive players per EPM:it’s Alex Caruso, Josh Hart, Delon Wright, Kenrich Williams, Josh Green and Finney-Smith.

He’s been a significant plus player in each of the last three seasons (even this one, when he’s been in a prolonged shooting slump), and he is on a killer contract. Finney-Smith will make an average of $14.3 million for each of the next three seasons after this one. As long as he maintains his defense and shooting, he’ll be worth far more than that.

More than anything, Dallas moving Finney-Smith signals that the franchise has faith in the other Maverick in that list above. Green has been quite good this season, providing real energy and activity on both ends. He could be a really strong transition partner in moments with Irving where the team wants to get uptempo. But whereas Finney-Smith has real value moving up and down the lineup taking tough assignments on defense, Green has largely been more of an option against high-level backcourt players.

Finney-Smith weighs about 20 pounds more than Green and has the ability with his length to play more physically. It’s possible Green could get there, but I’m a bit skeptical that he’d be able to handle those matchups this year. It would be good for Dallas to test that out soon.

Even with Finney-Smith, though, Dallas has been a poor defensive team this season. The Mavs are 24th in defensive efficiency entering this new era, and this trade leaves Dallas with even fewer positive defensive players. Green is one. Maxi Kleber, who is recovering from a hamstring injury that has seen him miss the last seven weeks, is certainly another. Reggie Bullock started the season roughly, but he’s been better on both ends recently. That’s really it, though, and the frontcourt is particularly concerning in this regard.

The three most talented players on the roster — Dončić, Irving and Christian Wood — are all liabilities on that end in one way or another. Dončić has smart, team-based instincts but is slow and can occasionally disengage a bit due to the offensive load he carries. Irving, when locked in, can give point-of-attack effort but is small (6-2) and a mismatch issue at the highest playoff levels. And Wood is not consistently reliable rotationally and isn’t really a switchable big either.

In the playoffs, it would be far too easy for opponents to hunt mismatches with those three on the court. In that vein, Dallas needs to survey the market for defensive help. The team can’t go into a playoff series against Nikola Jokić and Denver expecting that Dwight Powell, Kleber and Wood will get the job done. A team like Sacramento would likely strain the Mavs’ defense substantially, with Domantas Sabonis’ inside-out game. For Dallas to get the most out of this Irving deal, the team cannot be done making moves.

A lot of how Dallas can act now depends on how the team is planning for the sheer uncertainty that is trading for Irving. Irving is unpredictable, and he’s not under contract for next season. Can you really feel certain within the next week that he’s going to re-sign this summer? While Dallas’ hope is that things go well with Irving and result in him re-signing, you probably can’t assume anything. I would venture the Mavs see things that way, too, given the way they structured this trade.

If Irving chooses not to stay in Dallas, the team just cleared around $35 million off its cap sheet for this offseason. That could allow them to restart again around Dončić, something that would likely be very attractive for players around the league. The team has just $108.6 million in salaries slated to be on the roster right now, which is about $25 million less than the projected salary cap. The team could also waive and stretch Dāvis Bertāns’ contract over the next five years to add more than $11 million in space. That would get them very close to max cap space in the summer. The Mavs also made a conscious decision to include the 2029 first-round pick in this deal, which will allow the team to trade its 2025 and 2027 first-rounders moving forward.

The Athletic’s Tim Cato noted that the team is exploring other trades, and Marc Stein noted that we shouldn’t be surprised if Wood gets dealt prior to the deadline.

There is a small problem for Dallas. If the team decides to focus on its frontcourt for defensive help (or move Wood), there aren’t a ton of bigs on the market that make sense for Dallas if it wants to maintain that maneuverability this summer.

You can make a case for a couple of informed bets. Mo Bamba went to Texas and could very easily be available from Orlando as a high-potential swing for a lesser cost, but he has played exactly zero playoff minutes and hasn’t been all that consistent in the regular season. He has a contract that is non-guaranteed for next season at $10.3 million, so if things really broke right and the Mavs kept Irving, Bamba could also fit well while also letting them get out of the deal if they need the space. Another option would be to try to get Isaiah Hartenstein,the backup Knicks center who had a tremendous season for the LA Clippers last season but hasn’t been a fit for New York.

Could the Knicks be interested in taking Powell and his expiring deal for Hartenstein to get his $8.2 million off the books for next season, while the Mavericks bet on Hartenstein’s fun dribble-handoff game and flashes as a rim protector last season translating at the highest levels? This would be cost-effective for Dallas from an assets perspective but would cut into its space for the summer. Finally, Pacers’ young big man Goga Bitadze is in the last year of his rookie contract, and he’s at least shown some rim-protection flashes, but he would be a last-ditch effort given that he’s outside of the Pacers’ rotation right now.

Arguably, the better option for Dallas would be to embrace the small-ball lineup that got them to the Western Conference finals last year. Could the Mavs just look to play Irving, Dončić and Kleber at the five, while putting out two potential floor spacers on the wings who also defend? That would allow them to prioritize defensive wing help at the deadline, preferably on the bigger side. O.G. Anunoby would be perfect, but I don’t think the team’s two first-rounders is enough to get that deal done without getting outbid by someone else. Jae Crowder at the four could work, but would Phoenix really help a team it would be competing against in the playoffs?

Maybe the team could get involved in some sort of three-team trade with the Clippers and end up with Robert Covington? He’s a bit diminished on the defensive end and is locked into one more year on his contract, but he’d be an upgrade with his weakside rim protection. Still, this wouldn’t necessarily help in Jokić and Sabonis matchups, and those series would immediately turn into fire fights on offense.

But the Mavs also probably need to experience a modicum of success over the remaining half-season for all parties to feel good about this pairing. All of this is why you can sell yourself on this trade for the Mavericks. All-NBA players are hard to acquire. This trade improves the team’s upside now and in the future, while also providing a potential off-ramp if things go sour within the next five months.

If this were to happen all over again, it’s hard to believe he’d have much value around the league on a long-term deal, making it exceedingly difficult for Dallas to pivot for a large swath of the remaining time that Dončić is under contract before he has the potential to hit unrestricted free agency.
