昨天写了一个，探讨了一下“绿茶婊”的翻译。后来有同学说，你不要只是讲女生好不好，同样对男生的一些称呼的翻译，也可以拿出来讲嘛——具体的话就不引用了，主要的意思是这个。
为了表示男女“平等”，同时也体现翻吧君并不是一个男权主义者。今天就来讨论一下一个有点历史的词“凤凰男”的英文翻译。
昨天是在陈德彰教授所著的《热词新语翻译谭（三）》一书里遇到了“绿茶婊”，我也特意到这本书里找是不是也有“凤凰男”的英文。果不其然，在陈教授的同系列图书第二册里的一篇题为《高富帅和白富美》里，就提到这个词。陈教授将“凤凰男”翻译成“phoenix guy”，英文解释是a boy frome the countryside but has succeeded in the city。不过，将“男”用boy来指，似乎并不是很妥当，毕竟这一群体更多是指农村大学生进城读书并留下来打拼，后来终于有所成就。

对于这个指称的中文解释中，通常的定义是“指集全家之力于一身，发愤读书十余年，终于成为“山窝里飞出的金凤凰”，从而为一个家族蜕变带来希望的男性。他们进城市后，娶了孔雀女(城市女孩的代名词)。”（参见百度百科） 在这里，Phoenix guy也可以称为Phoenix man，英文意思是 a man who grew up poor and in thecountryside, but later moved to a big city and married a city girl. Dueto the couple's different backgrounds and habits, they often encounterproblems。
这些人——不论是在北上广深等一线城市，还是在二线城市——被媒体和学术界当作一个群体来看待，但并不是一种褒义，而是带着深深的恶意。一方面是指这些人成为了“凤凰”，进了城，但没有回到家乡，为养育他们的土地有任何直接的回报；二方面是成长的背景深深地烙在他们的心里，成为一种低人一等符号，区别于生于和长于城市里的土著们。在这个符号之下，他们的勤奋和努力以及取得的成就并没有得到认可，反而是因他们长久以来的生活习惯和日常行为与城市土著们有着太多差异而遭到诟病，引发群体性的歧视。最为典型代表的是电视剧《新结婚时代》中的男主人公何建国。
《中国日报》早在2009年月12日的评论版里介绍过这个词，用的英文是Phoenix man。在解释这个词的过程中，就明确提出了这个词的文化内涵。
凤凰男 (Fenghuang Nan)： Phoenix man
It refers to a man who grew up poor in the countryside but is able to move to a big city and become successful, thanks to hard work and the support from his family. It came from an old Chinese saying "A phoenix soars out of a chicken coop". Phoenix men often hope to marry city girls, but their marriages often encounter problems resulting from their different cultural backgrounds and habits. It has become a hot topic in recent years, resulting in the popularity of books and TV drama series on the theme.
一些学术论文在讨论“凤凰男”的现象时，也是更多地用Phoenix man来指代：
通过此次对工作生活在上海的凤凰男的社会认同情况的定量研究，笔者发现，凤凰男这一知识新移民群体的群体认同、文化认同、地域认同、职业认同以及社会地位认同五者之间相互关联。
By this quantitative research, the author found that the group identification, theculture identification, the region identification, the career identification and thesocio-economic status identification of this knowledge immigrant are interrelatedwith each other.
不过，在2011年，中国翻译协会举办的21届中译英研讨会上，专家们讨论了“凤凰男”的翻译，除了Phoenxi man之外，还给出了另外两个参考译文。一个是self-made man，另一个是ugly duckling。 Self-made man有点给”凤凰男“正名的意味，更多地突出了他们”自强不息“的精神。在维基百科里，对于self-made man的解释其实更为明确的指向了”美国梦“（American Dream），一种积极向上的精神：
A "self-made man" is a person who was born poor or otherwise disadvantaged, but who achieved great economic or other success thanks to their own hard work and ingenuity rather than because of any inherited fortune, family connections, or other privileges.
不过，"凤凰男"这个标签出现并不是一个欣赏他们的角度，是忽略了他们受到的不公正待遇。
Ugly duckling一词，则将英文里的寓言小故事”丑小鸭变美天鹅“延伸而来，让人产生心理上的认同。不过，ugly duckling更多地是指外貌方面的变化，由”丑“到”美“的过程，如《柯林斯大词典》里英文解释是
an unattractive or unpromising child who becomes a beautiful or much-admired adult.
《美国传统词典》（American Heritage）的解释略有不同：
A homely or unpromising individual who grows into an attractive or talented person, as in She was the family ugly duckling but blossomed in hertwenties.
这个解释里指出了“talented"。另外，在维基百科里，对童话故事Ugly Duckling的一个评语，点出了ugly duckling的真实身份：
The ugly duckling is the child of a swan whose egg accidentally rolled into a duck's nest.
丑小鸭根本就不是鸭子生的好不好，人家是一个鹅蛋，不巧滚到了鸭窝里罢了。
在知乎上，有人将“凤凰男”翻译成redneck。Redneck在美国俚语里的意思是“南方的乡巴老”，有贬低人，说人没教养的意思。在Dictionary.com中，其英文解释是：an uneducated white farm laborer, especially from the South.例如：
A large Texan redneck was shouting obscenities at Ali.
一个大块头的得克萨斯州红脖子正对阿里骂着脏话。
这个词也只是有“凤凰男”前半身的意思，后半段根本体现不出来。
