In a comedy show, top banana is often used to describe someone who are important, or who at least think they are. A top banana is the leading person in a comedy show. The funniest comedian is called the top banana. The next is second banana. And so on. Today top banana is still used in some business shows. Yet the expression can also be used to describe the top person in any area.

原来早在100年前美国还没有电影、电视的时候，有一种舞台演出，内容包括流行音乐、舞蹈和笑话。有时人们会在一个讲笑话的演员说完一个笑话之后给他一个香蕉。渐渐地人们就把最滑稽的演员称为top banana。
如今人们还会把“电视上演闹剧的人”叫做top banana，但更多时候你能够在提到政坛、经济圈中重要人物、第一把手的时候看到这个词组。
不过也有人说，该词源于美国有名的演员Johnny Mercer（约翰尼·默瑟）。他与菲尔·西尔弗斯合作，出演百老汇戏剧Top Banana。在戏剧中，把短语first banana应用到菲尔·西尔弗斯身上，然后这个短语就变成了top banana。后来这个词就用来表示如今的含义了。
