第53课 Hot snake
1、Hot snake
hot 这里是指触电的，带电的
a hot wire 高压电线
2、Since then, they have been trying to find out how the fire began.
since then 从那时起，注意由since 引导的时间状语从句，主句要用完成时态。
find out 查明，后面跟how 引导的宾语从句，注意语序是陈述句的语序。
3、Forest fires are often caused by broken glass or be cigarette ends which people
carelessly threw away.
fires 用复数，泛指许多火灾
cause 这里的意思是指引起
What caused his failure.
此句中 cause 是导致
glass 注意在句中是不可数名词
a glass 一个玻璃杯
glasses 复数形式是指眼镜
4、They were also quite sure that a cigarette end did not start the fire.
start 这里是引发的意思，跟上句中的cause 意思相近。
5、He noticed the remains of a snake which was wound round the electric wires
of a 16,000 volt power line.
remains 用复数形式，指尸体
which was wound round the electric wires of a 16,000 volt power line
是 which 引导的定语从句，修饰 a snake
wound 缠绕，是 wind 的过去分词，做表语，相当于形容词，曾经在27课接触过这个词，在当时句子中指蜿蜒而行的。
6、The bird had snatched up the snake from the ground and then dropped it on to
the wires.
snatch up 抓起，snatch有迅速抓取的意思
on to = onto
7、When it did so, it sent sparks down to the ground and these immediately started
the fires.
so 是代词，指代winding itself round the wires.
these 也是代词，指代sparks
8、At last firemen have put out a big forest fire in California.
用现在完成时体现动作的完成对现在的影响。
9、Since then, they have been trying to find out how the fire began.
用现在完成进行时表示动作已经延续到目前，也许已经完成，也许还在进行。
10、Forest fires are often caused by broken glass or by cigarette ends.
用一般现在时表示一般看法。
11、Yesterday, the firemen examined the ground carefully, but were not able to
find any broken glass.
用一般过去时叙述过去发生的动作，带有时间状语yesterday.
12、The bird had snatched up the snake from the ground and then dropped it
on to the wires.
用过去完成时表示动作发生在叙述中的时间（过去）之前。
