在英国或者其他英联邦国家的，七星瓢虫叫做ladybird或者lady beetle，而在美国和加拿大英语中，一般称作ladybug。三个称呼中都有lady，更特别的是ladybird，两个单词让人很难联想到“瓢虫”。
ladybird中的lady主要指圣母玛利亚（Mary），她又被欧洲各国尊称为Our Lady，圣母玛利亚早期画像里时常穿着红色的斗篷，红色外壳的七星瓢虫被视为身穿红袍的圣母玛利亚的象征，它身上的七个黑斑则象征着圣母的“七喜七悲”。此外，农民们认为瓢虫帮助他们消灭害虫，是圣母派来的使者，古希腊神话中bird具有“神的使者”的象征意义，而瓢虫像鸟儿一样会飞，于是，就给它取了ladybird这个名字。
