一 用ago表示多久时间“以前”时，要特别注意ago只能与一段时间连用，不与过去的某个时间点连用；并且ago只能放在时间段之后，不能置于其前。ago通常用在过去式中。如：
They moved to a new house some time ago.

We had our bicentenary celebrations not that long ago.
不久前，我们举行了200周年庆典活动。
The little girl you saw a moment ago was my niece.

二 before单独使用，泛指以前，在.....之前，可用于现在完成时或一般过去时。如：
They have to vacate their offices before Wednesday.
他们必须在星期三以前将办公室腾出来。
I have seen him before.
我以前曾经见到过他。
No conclusion should be drawn before all the facts are buttoned down.
所有事实弄清以前， 不应该下任何结论。
You must belt up before you start to drive.
你必须在开始驾驶前系好座位安全带。
You should nail his truck before he drives up the mountains.
在他把车开进山里之前，你得设法把他的卡车拦截住。
三 当before还可以与一段时间连用时，组成“时间段 before”，这时表示的含义是在以前向更过去的以前追溯，即指过去的过去，因此常用于过去完成时。如：
She said she had finished her term paper two hours before. （"finished"的动作发生在”said“之前的两个小时，表过去的过去）
她说她两个小时之前就已经完成学年论文了。
He said he had worked in Seoul four years before.
他说他4年之前就已经在首尔工作了。
