上一次在说buy的相关英语小知识的时候，我们说到，英文中往往越是简单的词语在口语中所表达的意思往往不是我们想的那样，今天我们的关键词是“thing”。
看到thing，大家最先想到的就是“东西、事物、情况”等意思，但是你知道吗，它还有下面这些意思。
比如：
1、I notice he has a thing for you.
我留意到他似乎对你有意思。
这里的thing表示“对某人有意思”。
2、Being funny is Chandler's thing and Ross's thing is getting divorced.
钱德勒的特长是搞笑；而罗斯的特长是离婚。
这里thing表示的是“某人的长处、某人最为显著的特点”。
了解了thing在口语中的这几种意思后，下面我们再来看看一些与thing有关的表达。
1、a close thing
从字面理解好像是“一件接近的事”，其实本意是指“侥幸脱险、千钧一发”等，想想千钧一发之际是不是危险或其他什么等都快临近了。
例句：
I luckily caught the bus, but it was a close thing.
我运气很好赶上了汽车，可差点就赶不上了。
2、first things first
这个通常出现在语境很和谐的场景，比如开玩笑的时候，意思是“最重要的事情先做，先说重要的”。
例句：
First things first. You get the food out of the basket, and I'll build a fire over there.
最重要的事情要先办。你把食物从篮子里拿出来，我到那儿去生个火。
3、not quite the thing
quite的意思是“很、相当、完全”，not quite the thing表示“不太合时宜；不太时兴；不得体”，当主体是人的时候，可以表示“身体不舒服；感到不适”。
例句：
I'm not quite the thing this morning.
今早身体不大舒服。
They were obviously of the opinion that his taste was not quite the thing.
他们显然认为他的品味已不太流行。
4、a whole thing
从字面理解，意思是“一整件事情”，本意是指容易引起争议的“复杂情况”。
例句：
Ugh, I forgot to invite Penny to the party, and now it's a whole thing.
呃，我忘记邀请Pennt来聚会了，现在情况变得复杂了起来。
