口语、文字之外，手势也是实用的交流神器，但同一个手势在不同的语境可能有完全不同的含义，不小心可能闹出大笑话。今天我们就来聊一聊那些常用手势的含义。
手的不同部位
大拇指、小拇指、手心、手背……
这些形容手势必不可少的词，用英语怎么说呢？
图上标明的说法之外，在称呼具体某个手指（digit）时，也可以直接简单地用序数词加digit，比如食指second digit，无名指fourth digit。
不同手势的含义
1. V sign or Victory hand
首先，几乎全世界通用的一个表示开心、庆祝的手势——比V。
- Clench /klentʃ/：捏紧，握紧
The V sign is a hand gesture in which the index and middle fingers are raised and parted, while the other fingers are clenched. It may seem to be a universal sign of happiness and celebration.
但是如果不留神在比V的时候把掌心对着自己，手背对着别人，这个动作就会给对方带来被冒犯的感觉。
- Commonwealth nations：英联邦国家
If you do it with your palm facing yourself, it can mean some four-letter word(骂人的话) in in some Commonwealth nations. The insulting version of the gesture is often compared to the offensive gesture known as " the finger ".
2. Fingers Crossed
看美剧、欧美明星的话，一定对这个食指、中指交叉的动作很熟悉。这是一个西方十分常见的手势，用来表示希望一切顺利、如人所愿，在日常英语会话时也常说“ Let’s keep our fingers crossed”来许愿、祈福。
- Implore /ɪmˈplɔːr/：祈求，恳求
To cross one's fingers is a hand gesture commonly used to wish for luck. Occasionally it is interpreted as an attempt to implore God for protection.
据说，交叉手指祈愿的习俗来自基督教，他们相信象征着上帝的十字架能驱邪避灾，而食指中指交叉正是用来代表十字架。
- Invoke /ɪnˈvoʊk/：求助于（尤指神灵）
Common use of crossed fingers is found in the Christians who would cross their fingers to invoke the power associated with Christ's cross for protection, when faced with evil.
但是如果你在越南摆出这个手势来祝福别人，被祝福的人却一点儿也不觉得被祝福了。
- Anatomy /əˈnæt̬.ə.mi/：身体；解剖学
This gesture won't bring you good luck in Vietnam. There, crossed fingers symbolize a part of the female anatomy and can be considered very rude when flashed at another person.
3. ILY sign and Devil horns
“我爱你”，怎么用手势来表达？画一个爱心？丘比特之箭？其实美国有一个非常简单实用的手势能够让你“说”出“我爱你”，叫做ILY sign。
这个手势最早来源于美国手语，把“I love you”的三个单词首字母的手语组合到一起，就成了“我爱你”的手势。
The sign originated among deaf schoolchildren using American Sign Language to create a sign from a combination of the signs for the letters I, L and Y (I Love You).
如果去听摇滚重金属音乐会，会发现摇滚歌手们常做的一个手势其实和ILY Sign非常相似，叫做Devil horns。
与我爱你手势稍微不同的是，摇滚手势Devil horns会把大拇指也放下去。
- Variation /ˌver.iˈeɪ.ʃən/：变化
A similar-looking but unrelated variation (thumb toward the palm rather than thumb extended) appears in heavy metal music culture as a "devil's horns" hand-sign.
“恶魔之角”手势常用于摇滚重金属音乐，但在意大利、西班牙、葡萄牙等一些地中海和拉丁国家，这个手势则可能被理解为“戴绿帽子”了。
The sign is often associated with heavy metal music and a symbol of fellowship for its listeners. In many Mediterranean and Latin countries, it can be used to indicate that someone's wife has been unfaithful.
4. Thumbs-Up
竖大拇指也是一个非常实用的手势，我们中文里常说“给你竖大拇指”来表达赞赏，英语里也有“ give a thumbs-up”的说法。此外，如果去西方国家旅行，也可以用竖大拇指来拦过往的出租车。
不过，要注意的是，在希腊、意大利、阿富汗的一些地方，竖大拇指表示完全相反的意思——极度的厌恶。
- Up yours! （表示反感）去你的！
- Hitchhike /ˈhɪtʃ.haɪk/：搭便车
The thumbs-up signals approval in most places, but in Afghanistan, Iran, parts of Italy, and Greece, it means "up yours!" So next time you're trying to hitchhike in these places, you should reconsider before sticking out your thumb.
