Simple Rules:

◆ Rule NO.1: Opinion Before Fact (Opinions go first; facts go second)

第一条简单规则:观点先于事实。

★ Adjectives of opinion:

Nice/beautiful/useful/delicious, etc.

When you describe something as DELICIOUS, it doesn’t mean that everybody will agree.

当你把某样东西描述为美味时,并不意味着所有人都会同意。

★ Adjectives of fact:

Big/new/green/silk describe facts.

☆ They live in a beautiful old house on the edge of the city.

☆ 他们住在城市边缘的一座漂亮的老房子里。

☆ We had some delicious Korean food with some friends.

☆ Why are you wearing those ugly pink trousers?

☆ 你为什么要穿那条难看的粉色裤子?

☆ She has an interesting new perspective on the economic situation.

☆ 她对经济形势有一个有趣的新观点。

★ What if we have more than one adjective that describe one opinion? Like INTERESTING and BEAUTIFUL. It doesn’t matter which one comes first. 如果我们有一个以上的形容词来描述一个观点呢?比如INTERESTING 和 BEAUTIFUL。哪一个在前都可以。

☆ I’m going to show you my beautiful, interesting knick-knacks.

☆ 我要向你展示一下我的美丽的、有趣的小玩意儿。

OR

☆ I’m going to show you my interesting, beautiful knick-knacks.

☆ 我要向你展示一下我的有趣的、美丽的小玩意儿。

◆ Rule NO. 2: General Before Specific (General ideas go before specific ideas)

第二条简单规则:一般性描述先于具体描述。

☆ A long wooden table 一张长木桌

(The word LONG is more general. Many things can be LONG in many different ways. The word WOODEN is more specific. Generally speaking, something can only be WOODEN if it’s actually made of wood.)

LONG这个词比较笼统。许多东西都可以描述为LONG。而WOODEN这个词更具体。一般来说,只有当某样东西确实是由木头做的,才可以描述为WOODEN。

★ Adjectives with a general meaning: Old/hot/small, ect.

★ Adjectives like Green, French or Striped are more specific.

☆ I love these old black-and-white films.

☆ 我喜欢这些黑白的老电影。

☆ We bought a new leather sofa for the living room.
