在英语构词法里，有一种方式是将两个词抽取一部分，再重新组合在一起，形成一个新的词，意思取两个词的一部分。这种方式构成的词称为“合成词”，即blend words。里维斯·卡罗在他的《镜中爱丽丝》里把它叫做混合词，因为一个单词包含了两个单词的意思。
我们最常见的混合词有brunch （breakfast lunch，早午餐）、motel（motor hotel，汽车旅馆）、Amerasian ( America Asian， 美亚混血儿)等。不过，还有一些混合词可能是不多见，但却很有意思！
