前面我们讲过hardly和scarcely的基本用法，两者都是副词，属于半否定式。在普通的写作当中一般把hardly和scarcely完全看作是同义词，但也稍有区别，现就其区别及考点进行讨论。
hardly意思是“几乎不，简直不”，着重指困难，一般用来指程度，因此它常常用于修饰表示能力的词。比如：I can hardly know what to say.我简直不知说什么好。We can hardly believe that.我们简直不能相信那件事。
scarcely意思是“几乎没有，简直不”，着重于不足，一般指数量，因此它后边经常和enough、 sufficient等一些词连用。比如：There were scarcely enough food for them at that time.那个时候他们几乎没有充足的食物。The bus was so crowded that there was scarcely sufficient room for us.电车上十分拥挤，几乎没有我们立足之地。She spoke scarcely a word of English，它几乎一个英语单词也没有讲。
Hardly scarcely两个词的共同点是：后面都可以同when（before）搭配使用，表示“刚……就”，同时，主句中的主谓有部分颠倒现象。比如：
Hardly had I reached the station when (before) the train started.我刚到车站，火车就开了。Scarcely had he opened the door when (before) a gust of wind blew the candle out.他刚开门，一阵风把蜡烛吹灭了。
下面看两道有关hardly和scarcely的考题。
1. Hardly ______when the girl ran toward it.
A. had the plane landed B. did the plane land
C. the plane had landed D. the plane landed
这个题干的意思是：飞机刚落地，女孩就跑过去了。我们都知道hardly和when搭配使用，但题中副词hardly位于句首，那么主句需要部分倒装，也就是将谓语动词的一部分放在主语前面。我们也知道，hardly…when中，when的后面用过去时的话，主句多用过去完成时，因此，选项中只有A选项用了had landed，而且had放在了主语the plane的前面，A选项为正确选项。
2. She _______the piece into her mouth when she fell down dead upon the ground.
A. scarcely had put B. had scarcely put
C. had put scarcely D. has scarcely put
这个题的题干意思是：她刚把那块苹果放进嘴里，就倒在地上死了。从题干和选项可以看出这个题是在考scarcely …when的正确使用问题。从时态的使用上讲，scarcely …when中应该是主句用过去完成时，从句用一般过去时，那么，选项A、B、C都是符合的。但三个选项中，scarcely的位置不同。根据其搭配的习惯使用判断，scarcely多放在过去完成时的两词之间，也就是had scarcely put，因此，选项B正确。
