在机械相关的专利翻译中，我们经常会遇到各种与“卡”搭配的词语，比如卡合、卡扣、卡接等等。但是这些与“卡”字相关联的词语准确对应的英文究竟是clamp、clip、Fasten、snap-fit，还是其他呢？
在不理解技术方案或不去参阅附图的情况下，这些词语的确切含义很难界定。所以应该如何准确地选择与“卡”对应的、符合语境的术语就成为了机械翻译的一个小难点。
在本文中，笔者提供几个与“卡”相关联的英文选词，来具体说明这些词语在实际场景中应该如何区分翻译。
1.Snap：
to fasten a piece of clothing with a snap.
用子母扣扣上，用摁扣扣上（衣服）;（啪的一声）扣上，打开。与该动作类似的机械连接都可用snap表达，如：
例1： 装配时，所述第一凸起（4）卡入卡槽（3），将外壳（1）的第一端与底板（2）连接，通过卡接将外壳（1）的第二端与底板（2）固定。

译文：
During assembly, the first protrusions (4) are snapped into the slot (3) to connect the first end of the housing (1) to the base plate (2), and the second end of the housing (1) is fixed to the base plate (2) by means of snap-in connection.

典型的铆钉按扣的四个元件是：从左上方起，孔眼（eyelet）、座（socket）、螺栓（stud）以及帽（cap）。
2.Clamp：
名词：A clamp (noun) is a fastening device used to hold or secure objects tightly together to prevent movement or separation through the application of inward pressure.
例如，日常生活中常见的夹钳就属于一种比较典型的夹具。
动词：To clamp is to hold sth tightly, or fasten two things together, with a clamp.
（用夹具）夹紧，夹住，固定。一般涉及将某一部件紧紧夹住、牢牢固定住的含义。
例2：把木板的一端卡在桌子的边上。
译文：Clamp one end of the board to the edge of the table.
3.Fasten：
to close or join together the two parts of sth; to become closed or joined together.
（使两部分）系牢，扎牢，扣紧；对应的名词是fastener。在“卡”表示的并不是真正的卡紧、夹紧的含义，要避免使用clamp，优选使用fasten，因为fasten的含义相对宽泛，没有限制具体的连接方式，仅表达了“固定”的意思。如：
例3：复位件为弹片，弹片中间位置与支撑架卡接。
译文：The reset member is an elastic piece, and the middle position of the elastic piece is fastened to the support frame.
4.Buckle：
a buckle is a device used for fastening two loose ends, with one end attached to it and the other held by a catch in a secure but adjustable manner.
Buckle更多指的是卡扣，跟前面提及的术语最主要的区别在于是将两个松的端部固定在一起。如皮带、安全带上的搭扣。
Clip:
any of a number of devices which grip, clasp, or hook or with which one grips, clasps, or hooks, usually made of metal or plastic.
例如发卡、别针等。
例4：卡扣结构3包括膨胀卡扣31和膨胀卡头32。
译文：The clip-on structure 3 comprises an expansion buckle 31 and an expansion clip 32.

5.Snap-fit：
Snap-fit这个词作名词讲是卡扣的意思；而与此相关的动作被称为“卡合”。其主要分为以下三类。
1）悬臂状接头（Cantilever Shape Joints）：其基本设计包括在其尖端带有锥形钩的悬臂梁，且另一接合部分具有相配合的凹陷部。

2）扭转卡扣接头（Torsion Snap Joints）：卡合摇臂（snap fit rocker arm）和扭杆（torsion bar）被一体模制以用于最佳连接。使用者只需要推动梁的自由端来提起钩，就可以释放接头。

3）环形卡扣接头（Annular Snap Joints）：利用环形卡扣接头的卡扣设计通常用于椭圆形或圆形部件。这些部件包括笔帽和容器盖等，例如，常会在笔帽中发现这种卡扣设计。

译文：The fixed valve plate 6 is snap-fitted on the base 12.

以上只是在日常翻译中遇到的非常有限的例子，当然还有各种与“卡”相关的场景。在遇到这个词语时，我们应谨慎选词，以力求所选的译文最符合申请人所想要表达的真正含义。
