米高梅 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM)好莱坞五大电影公司之一
一个电影制作公司拍摄了电影史上最出色的影片之一——《乱世佳人》，创造出历久不衰的银幕经典——007，塑造了不朽的卡通形象——猫和老鼠，发起成立了美国电影艺术与科学学院，并推出了学院奖（即奥斯卡）……要知道，上面几个成就中的任何一个，都可以让这个公司不朽，何况几个神话集于一身。这个公司的雄狮利奥标志一度被当成了美国的象征，它旗下巨星云集，曾创造每周推出一部电影的神话。这个公司的大号叫米高梅。
初创
1923年电影业出现危机，当时的米特罗电影制片公司出现严重亏损。老板马尔科斯·洛夫不但没有后退，反而张开大口又买下了同样濒于破产的高德温电影制片公司。至此，米高梅公司有了“米”和“高”。然而，仅靠这一赌注远远不够，洛夫所缺的是—个得力的经营者。后来，他在众多可选择的对象中挑选了路易斯·梅耶—— 一个好莱坞小电影制片公司的老板，经过数日长谈，梅耶同意加盟。
1924年4月24日，世界电影史上的最大奇迹——米高梅（米特罗——高德温——梅耶的简称）电影公司宣告成立，并从此开始制造出一系列神话。
辉煌
公司成立后，梅耶成为总经理，开始施展他的卓越才华，将米高梅缔造成电影界的巨无霸，他自己也成了整个好莱坞的帝王。
1925年，梅耶施出大手笔——推出前无古人的历史巨片《宾虚》，影片虽然耗费了公司大量金钱，但同时创造了史无前例的票房记录，也为米高梅公司赢得了巨大声誉。
1929年，为顺应有声电影的历史潮流，米高梅斥资３５万美元当时是天文数字 拍摄歌舞片《百老汇的旋律》，影片场面布景之华丽、歌舞设计之新颖、声音运用之自如，将电影推到一个崭新的高度。影片上映后轰动一时，顺理成章地摘取了第二届奥斯卡最佳影片奖。
在上世纪四十年代末之前，在梅耶的精心打理下，米高梅一直是好莱坞最大、最有影响的集制片、发行、放映于一身的电影公司，它的雄师标志甚至成了美国的象征。
米高梅旗下巨星云集，克拉克·盖博、斯宾塞·屈塞、加里·格兰特、琼·克劳馥、凯瑟琳·赫本、葛丽泰·嘉宝、伊丽莎白·泰勒等人都服务于此。前二十届奥斯卡共产生了40位影帝和影后，其中11位是在米高梅推出的影片中获得的，而当时好莱坞有八大制片公司。这11位影帝影后中包括斯宾塞·屈塞、罗伯特·多纳特、加里·格兰特和诺玛·希拉、葛丽亚·嘉逊、费雯丽·哈利、英格丽·褒曼等超级巨星。
这一时期，米高梅佳片迭出，像《百老汇的旋律》第二届奥斯卡最佳影片 、《大饭店》 第五届奥斯卡最佳影片 、《叛舰喋血记》第八届奥斯卡最佳影片 、《歌舞大王奇格菲》第九届奥斯卡最佳影片 、《绿野仙踪》、《魂断蓝桥》、《费城故事》、《乱世佳人》第十二届奥斯卡最佳影片 、《化身博士》、《忠勇之家》第十五届奥斯卡最佳影片 、《煤气灯下》等等，都堪称电影史上的经典。
中兴与衰落
第二次世界大战后，米高梅公司连连受到打击，其中三件事是致命的。
1948年5月，美国最高法院根据反托拉斯法作出判决，判定大公司非法垄断。这一判决要求制作公司只管制片，放弃发行和电影院业务的经营。这就给像米高梅这样集制作、发行和放映于一身的大公司致命一击，因为它的主要财源被切断了。
第二个打击来自电视业。二战后，电视开始大量进入家庭，到五十年代，电影观众比四十年代少了一半，到1957年，米高梅持续了30年盈利的局面被打破。
第三个打击就是梅耶的离去。梅耶是米高梅的最大功臣，他的电影主张的出发点和归宿就是娱乐大众，而公司董事会对他的怀疑却与日俱增。到五十年代初，他与自己的助手道尔·夏里的矛盾越来越大，最终董事会留下了夏里而让梅耶走人。1951年，梅耶这位一度是好莱坞最有权势的人被迫离开米高梅。
由于电视的压迫，米高梅开始在宽银幕、大制作上下工夫。1959年，他们精心准备了数年之久的新版《宾虚》火爆登场。这部影片耗资1500万美元，创当时电影摄制花销的最高记录。这部影片还获得了１１项奥斯卡，这一记录至今没被打破。影片上映后，观众又被从电视机前拉回到电影院，米高梅也迎来了短暂的中兴。
然而，大制作只能偶尔为之，在随后的10年里。米高梅虽有《西北偏北》、《青楼艳妓》、《洛丽塔》、《日瓦格医生》等佳作，但仍连年亏损。
不完美的结局
由于连年亏损，1970年，米高梅被美国赌业大亨柯克·克尔科里恩买下。克尔科里恩是拉斯维加斯赌王，热衷于赌场和宾馆业，因此，米高梅与电影业越来越远。此后，克尔科里恩两次将米高梅转卖，又两次买回，使米高梅饱经磨难。
这其间，米高梅有过—次小小的转机，那是1981年，公司吞并了另一个不景气的大制片公司美国联合艺术家影片公司，这个公司曾拍出过《原野百合花》、《西区故事》、《桃色公寓》，《飞越疯人院》、《毕业生》、《洛奇》等优秀影片，并拥有007的品牌。然而当年两家公司联合起来的电影市场份额仅占可怜的６％。
由于没有任何有线电视频道、电视网络或宽带管道，没有传媒集团做后盾，像米高梅这样的独立制片公司自然处处受制于人。
2001年，米高梅靠《汉尼拔》、《律政俏佳人》的业绩得到４个多亿的票房收入，公司推出的其他影片则都不盈利。2002年，公司斥巨资投拍的战争大片《风语者》票房惨败，公司高层被迫辞职，米高梅再次进入被拍卖行列。
去年底，索尼公司以近50亿美元的价格将米高梅买下，从此，好莱坞八大公司中的最后一个独立制片公司消失了。如今，米高梅与哥伦比亚公司同属索尼旗下，开始了新的征程。然而，它拥有的170座奥斯卡金像（数量为好莱坞八大制片公司之首）却仍在诉说着它曾经的辉煌。
