People watched on the shore by Howrah Bridge in Kolkata to witness Lahiri being shackled with six locks and a chain. He was then dropped into the Hooghly River from a boat around midday on Sunday, The Times of India reported.

However, he never re-emerged. Both police and a team of divers have been unable to find him.

当地一份报纸的摄影师贾扬特·肖(Jayant Shaw)告诉BBC，在拉希里表演之前，他还采访了这位魔术师。
"I asked him why he risked his life for magic," Mr Shaw said. "He [Mr Lahiri] smiled and said, 'If I do it right, it's magic. If I make a mistake, it becomes tragic.'"

The magician told him that he wanted to do this trick in order "to revive interest in magic".

He was locked inside a bullet proof glass box and tied with a chain.
