这个词来自希腊文，相传在6世纪，普罗科皮亚斯（Procopious）是拜占庭有名的史学家，他的三部作品，除了《战争》、《建筑》之外，还有一本在世时未出版的Anekdota，意思是未公开的事，记录了当时皇帝查世丁尼一世的皇后及许多大臣的秘闻。
后来这个词演变成了anecdote，表示轶事，即未经史书记载的，世人不知道的事情，现在也多指有关名人的真实有趣的小故事。
