众所周知，在英语中，“a.m”代表早上，“p.m”代表下午。
那么问题来了：中午12点是“a.m”还是“p.m”呢？
要搞清楚这个问题，我们首先来看一下“a.m”和“p.m”的具体含义：
“a.m”是“ante meridiem”的缩写。
它指的是一天中的午前，也就是12点之前。
如“8.00 a.m”就表示“早上8：00”。
而“ p.m”是“post meridiem”的缩写。
它指的是一天中的午后。
所以，“中午12点”并不包含在“a.m”和“ p.m”中~
美国国家标准与技术研究所(National Institute of Standards and Technology，NIST)曾给出答案：
NIST认为：meridiem（n. 正午） 就是 noon（n. 中午）。
所以，正午十二点应该表达为12:00 noon 。
而午夜十二点可以表达为12:00 midnight，以方便区分。
The check-out time is 12 noon, Sir.
先生，退房时间是中午12点。

不过，12:00 midnight 的用法也比较模棱两可！
因为它无法区分是某一天开始的午夜，还是结束的午夜。
因此，我们可以用00:00（zero o'clock）来表示某一天开始的午夜。
那么，还有哪些有关时间的表达呢？
我们常常会遇见要表达“半小时之内”的情况。
那么我们就可以用“分钟 past 小时”的形式。
如“6:10”，就是“ ten past six”。
It was ten past six by the kitchen clock.
厨房的钟六点十分了。
如果超出“半小时”。
我们则可以用“（相差的）分钟 to （下一）小时”来表示。
如“10:35”，就是“ twenty-five to eleven”。
那么刚好要表述的时间是“半小时”呢？
我么可以用“half past 小时”：
如“11:30”，就是“ half past eleven”。
当然，还有一些情况经常跟“15分钟”有关。
我们都知道“15分钟”是“a quarter”。
那么“9:15”怎么说？
What's the time? It's a quarter past nine. it's time for class.
几点了？九点一刻。上课的时间到了。
除了“a quarter past nine”外。
还可以用“ nine fifteen”或者是“fifteen past nine”表示。

1. turn back the clock
“turn back the clock” 直译为“将钟表的时针往回拨”。
它有两个含义：
一是指“回想、回忆过去发生的事情”，即“时光倒流”，追溯过往的情景，常带有怀旧和惋惜的情感。
Three out of four of the dropouts said if they could turn back the clock they would choose to stay, and eight out of ten said they now recognized that a high school diploma was important to succeed in life.

2. watch the clock
从字面上看，短语 “watch the clock”的意思是“看表”。
其实真正的的意思是 “因感到无聊、想要或需要做其它事情而频繁地查看时钟或手表上的时间”。
通常来事表示“看时间等下班”。
它的名词 “clock-watcher” 就是指 “总是掐着点下班或休息的人”。
That new guy is a total clock-watcher. He checked his watch FIVE times in one hour and left his desk exactly at five o'clock.
那个新来的员工就是个看表族，他一个小时内看了五次表，一到五点立马走人了。
3. around the clock
从字面上看，“around”表“围绕”，“clock ”是钟表。连起来就是“围绕着钟表不停转”。
它的英文释义就是 “all day and all night without stopping”。
所以中文意思就是“夜以继日地（工作、学习）等”。
We are studying around the clock when we are preparing for the final exam.我们在准备期末考试的时候，夜以继日的学习。
4. against the clock
“against the clock” 本来表示“抢在某一时刻之前，跟时间赛跑”。
可进一步引申为“争分夺秒”。
We are working against the clock to finish the report by Friday.
我们正在抢时间要在星期五之前完成这一报告。
5. the clock is ticking
这句经典俚语出自美剧《蒸发的摩根夫妇》。
“tick”是个象声词，专指“钟表走动时候的滴答声”。“The clock is ticking”就是说“钟表正在滴答作响”。
所以表示“时间飞逝、时间所剩不多”。
另外，它在口语里面还会有“催促别人”的意思哦。
They have a chance to tie the game, but the clock is ticking.
他们还有扳平比赛的机会，但所剩时间不多了。
总结
☞ 在表示中午12点的时候，避免使用12 a.m.或者12 p.m. ，可以直接说“noon”。
☞ 在表示时间的时候，可以用24时计时法，12:00就表示中午12点，24:00就表示午夜12点。
☞ 在非正式语境下（口语），你也可以用12 noon,但是，在正式的写作中不能用这种说法哦！
☞ 在写正式的学术论文时，一定要用24时计时法。

4、如果所表述的时间恰好为半小时，可以用“half past 小时”：

5、如果所表述的分钟和15有关，就有三种表达法：
（15分钟又叫一刻钟：aquarter）
9：15 nine fifteen ；fifteen past nine ；a quarter past nine
3：45 three forty-five；fifteen to four ；a quarterto four
6、整点的表达：
现在是两点整。It‘s two. / It’s two o‘clock.
另外英语中的 noon 和midnight可分别直接表示白天和夜晚的12点：
It‘s （twelve） noon. 现在是中午十二点。
It‘s （twelve） midnight. 现在是半夜零点。
7、大约时间：
It‘s almost two. 马上到两点了。
It‘s not quite two. 还不到两点。
It‘s just after two. 刚过两点。
