一、lay 动词。意思是“放（在......上）”。多指“横放”。例如：
A clerk laid a slip of paper on the desk.书记员在桌子上放了一张纸。
They laid me down on the bed. 他们把我放倒在床上。
He went over and laid his cup on the tray.他走过去把他的杯子放在托盘上。
二、place 及物动词。意思是“放在（使处于）某位置”。指把东西放在一定的位置上去。例如：
Place the books in alphabetical order. 把书按字母顺序放好。
You place me in a very difficult position.你把我推到一个困难的位置上。
Place the chair in the corner. 把椅子放到角落里去。
三、put 及物动词。意思是“放、搁”。用得很广，可用于人，也可用于物，可用于具体事物，也可用于抽象事物。例如：
Where has he put my clothes？ 他把我的衣服放在哪儿了？
