在申请博士和奖学金的时候，往往需要申请者提交语言能力证明（Language Proficiency Certificate）或者工作语言证明（Medium of Instruction Letter）。本片文章以英语为例。
语言能力证明一般提交雅、托福，多邻国，或者申请学校提供的英语考试和英语面试证明。一般要求近两年的语言证书。如果申请者允许参加学校的英语考试，那么相对来讲，大多数学校的英语考试要比雅思、托福考试更容易些。
