Clothes v.s Clothing
clothes 和 clothing 均可表示“衣服”，用作“衣服”的统称，但在用法上有差别：
1. clothes 是没有单数形式的复数名词, 其前不可加不定冠词，也不可加数词，但可用 some, these, those, many, few 等词修饰。如：如 those clothes / few clothes / many clothes
2. clothing 是不可数名词。如：

Garment:
Garment即是一件clothing，特别指穿在外面的clothing，如She pulled the garment on and zipped it up.她穿上衣服并拉好拉链。
Garment更多的是商业用语，用于服装的生产和销售。例如：the garment industry 制衣业，garment design。在美国，如果说服装厂，一定是用garment factory, 决不会说clothes factory.
Apparel和attire
Apparel和attire主要用于穿在外面的全副高雅clothing，但这种意思多已被dress所取代。Apparel（通常可以写作wearing apparel）是clothing和clothes的较正式用字。与attire比较，它偏于指某人身上所穿的全部garments；而attire则往往偏于指某人的clothes给人的印象。
例如 dress in formal attire to show your professional attitude towards the interview ;the strange attire of the eccentric old woman（那古怪老妇的奇装异服）.
attire多见于标语会有"proper attair is a must"，“proper/formal/casual attire”。
Gear, togs, garb
Gear和togs均指clothes，但语气比较随便得多。Togs是各很旧式的字，现在如使用起来，也差不多总是指泳装。即使用于泳装，togs也大半为gear所代替；而后者除指一般clothing之外，也有特定的用法。例如：Modern gear does not suit stout or older men; riding gear（骑马装）.
Garb是各书卷气颇重的字，主要用于指某职业或地位的典型clothing。例如：the garb of a priest（牧师的装束）;kingly garb（帝王的服饰）
