1、Dreams of finding lost treasure almost came true recently.
说梦想变成现实，通常用come true, come 在这里是连系动词，后面跟形容词，意思是变成什么。
例句：The door came true. 门开了。
2、The machine was used in a cave near the seashore where-- it is said-- pirates used to
hide gold.
it is said 据说，是插入语，起补充说明的作用，用破折号跟其它分开，去掉也不影响整句的意思。
where pirates used to hide gold
where 引导的定语从句，修饰a cave near the seashore
used to do sth. 过去常常做某事
3、The pirates would often bury gold in the cave and then fail to collect it.
would do sth. 表示过去的习惯性动作，有总是怎么样的意思。
fail 跟 bury 一样是跟在助动词 would 后面的谓语动词，fail 前面省略了would，是承前省略。
fail to do sth. 没能做某事
collect 此句中意思是取走，它还有收取的意思， 比如 collect taxes 收税
4、The leader of the party was examining the soil near the entrance to the cave when the
machine showed that there was gold under the ground.
注意entrance 后面用介词to
注意when 在句子中间的用法，这里表示在这个时候

fairly 是程度副词
fairly, quite, rather, pretty, very 这些程度副词的意思都是相当，颇，程度由前往后是逐渐加强的。

armed with the new machine, 做状语，表示一种伴随状态
be armed with 用......装备起来，此句中省略了be，文中还有一个句子也是同样的结构，省略了be: Very excited, the party dug a hole two feet deep.
hoping to find buried treasure 现在分词短语，在句子中也表示伴随状况，做状语。
