Potato
by Kang Chengjia
It is fat, and clumsy. A sniff of it,
you can still smell the earth.
It must have come from the countryside,
planted by an old man similar to my grandfather.
He watered it, fertilized it,
and even talked to it in his lonely hours.
The potato knew the land more than a child does,
with an unspoken ability
to mature finely after hoarfrost;
soon after frost, it left the land
to lie in a big truck, then on a shelf in a supermarket,
then on our kitchen table.
As I slice the potato and hear it crisply unfold,
thoughts about elderly people, about the land,
about the changing seasons all rush to my head,
but soon replaced by the crisp lightness of the potato, now shredded.
