On March 9, Jessica Gardner, the librarian of Cambridge University, received a "mysterious gift" at the door of her office.

A bright pink handbag was placed on the ground. In the bag was a huge envelope that read: "curator, Happy Easter, X".

Two "stolen" notebooks written by Charles Darwin have been mysteriously returned to Cambridge University, 22 years after they were last seen.

But who returned the two postcard-sized notepads is a real whodunit. They were left anonymously in a bright pink gift bag containing the original blue box the notebooks were kept in and a plain brown envelope.

These two palm sized pamphlets marked with "B" and "C" are one of the most valuable cultural relics left by Darwin. They record his thoughts on species evolution and the famous "tree of life evolution" in the future.

"Although notebooks are small and only as big as postcards, their impact on the history of science and their importance in the many world-class collections of the Cambridge University Library are unparalleled," Gardner said.

Because the returnee put the notebook in the blind area of monitoring, the police have not found the "mysterious man" so far. Who took the notebook? Who returned it? Perhaps, like every "unsolved mystery", these lost and recovered cultural relics will always leave many intriguing problems.

Notebooks B and C show Darwin's thinking before he read Thomas Malthus's Essay on the Principle of Population in late September 1838, which suggested to Darwin the idea of natural selection as a mechanism for evolution. The notebooks provide an extraordinary insight into Darwin's search for the solution to what one contemporary had called "that mystery of mysteries", the origin of new species.

Cultural relics loaded with history and knowledge are the common cultural heritage of all mankind and deserve to be shared by the world.
