“Taikonaut”是由中文“太空”的拼音和英语单词astronaut混成的拼缀词，特指中国航天员。根据维基词典，该词最早由马来西亚华人赵里昱于1998年提出。
The word is a hybrid of the Chinese term "taikong" (space) and the Greek "naut" (traveler), modelled after astronaut, cosmonaut, etc. The term was coined in 1998 by Chiew Lee Yih from Malaysia, who used it first in newsgroups.
欧空局在推特上转发了法新社的报道并写道：
Congratulations to the China National Space Administration on the launch of three 'taikonauts'on their Shenzhou 12 mission to the Tianhe (Heavenly Harmony) space station.
“祝贺中国国家航天局发射神舟十二号载人飞船，将三名‘taikonauts’送入天和空间站（核心舱）。”
俄联邦航天局也在推特上祝贺了中方：“祝贺我们的中国同行成功将神舟十二号载人飞船，以及3名‘taikonauts’送入天和空间站（核心舱）。中国向前迈出了自信一步！团结一致，我们能做到更多！”
不少外媒在报道这则新闻时，也用taikonauts指代我国的航天员。
作为仅有的三个独立载人航天国家，美国、俄罗斯和中国航天员的称呼有所区别。
美国或其他国家的航天员名称一般是“astronauts”，俄罗斯（或苏联）航天员则被称为“космонавт”（kosmonavt），英文版本就是cosmonaut。

而taikonaut一词广泛见诸外媒报端则是在2003年，那年，我国成功发射载人航天飞船神舟五号，杨利伟成为中国进入太空第一人。
'Taikonaut' became well known in 2003 when China sent its first spaceman Yang Liwei to space in the Shenzhou-5 spacecraft.
虽然对于中国的航天员，国内外的英文报道中也常使用“astronauts”一词来表示，但随着中国航天事业的发展，外媒越来越多地用“taikonauts”来称呼中国航天员。牛津、朗文等权威英文词典也收录了这一单词。
北京外国语大学教授陈琳认为：
"The fact that taikonaut has been listed in popular dictionaries like Oxford and Longman shows that the word has been recognized by quite a number of English speakers. It can be seen as another sign of China's growing global influence."
牛津、朗文等流行词典收入了taikonaut，表明该词已被广大英语使用者所接受。这也是中国国际影响力提升的另一体现。
