今天,我们就来一起分析一下,如何使用英语情态动词,表示“可能”和“不可能”

Possible(可能,但不确定)

1.将来的possible

could, might may

  • They might come later. (= Perhaps/Maybe they will come later.)
  • They may come by car. (= Perhaps/Maybe they will come by car.)
  • If we don't hurry we could be late. (= Perhaps/Maybe we will be late)

2.现在或过去的possible

could have, might have may have

  • It's ten o'clock. They might have arrived now.
  • They could have arrived hours ago.

3.普遍意义上的possible(一般都是可能如此)

现在用can;过去用could

  • It can be very cold in winter. (= It is sometimes very cold in winter)
  • You can easily lose your way in the dark. (= People often lose their way in the dark)
  • It could be very cold in winter. (= Sometimes it was very cold in winter.)
  • You could lose your way in the dark. (= People often lost their way in the dark)

不可能Impossible:

现在或将来不可能用can't ;过去不可能用couldn't

  • That can't be true.
  • We knew it could not be true.

Probable(可能,且确定性很大)

1.肯定发生,且理由充分

must

  • It's getting dark. It must be quite late.
  • You haven't eaten all day. You must be hungry.

2.过去肯定发生,且理由充分

must have

  • They hadn't eaten all day. They must have been hungry.
  • You look happy. You must have heard the good news.

3.现在或将来非常有可能,且理由充分

should

  • Ask Miranda. She should know.
  • It's nearly six o'clock. They should arrive soon.
  • We use should have to talk about the past:
  • It's nearly eleven o'clock. They should have arrived by now.
