China’s booming taxi-hailing market has caught the attention of regulators.
China’s Ministry of Transport said in January that it would forbid unauthorized private-car owners from using the ride-hailing apps to pick up passengers for profit. Beijing’s traffic authorities also said that they would step up efforts to curb what it called illegal operations by private cars that use the Internet and mobile apps to attract consumers. In February last year Shanghai released rules to curb the use of taxi apps at peak times, defined as between 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. and between 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. But she said that government was encouraging more efficient ways to ease transportation woes brought about by China’s rapid growth in car ownership.
