1. 用作名词 意为"需要"，短语 in need (of…) 意为"需要……"

2. 用作实意动词，意为"需要"，既可用于肯定句，也可用于否定句和疑问句，构成否定句和疑问句时要借助于助动词do或does。具体用法：

I don't need any help.
我不需要任何帮助。
(2) need to do sth. 需要做某事
They need to get ready for the test.

(4) need doing sth. 含有被动意义，意为"需要被……"。
My bike is broken. It needs mending.
我的自行车坏了，它需要修理。
The door and windows need painting.

3. need 用作情态动词, 意为"必要，需要"。具体用法：
(1)没有人称和数的变化，后接动词原形; (2) 只用于否定句、疑问句和if 及whether 引导的宾语从句; (3) need 的否定形式为needn't, 且must 引导的一般疑问的否定回答要用needn't, 表示"不必"。
