On track 和 on the track 字面上的差别一目了然，类似的我们并不少见，如 out of wood 和 out of the woods，然而它们实际的意思却截然不同，那么 on track 和 on the track 哪个才是“在轨道上”等意思呢？
其实英语中类似区别的介词短语数不胜数，它们都大同小异；有定冠词 the 修饰的多数都是“具体”的特指，也就是位置关系，此时介词后面的名词多为地点或位置等名词；而没有定冠词等其他成分修饰的，多半表示的是一种“抽象”的状态或方式等，例如：
You can get there just as cheaply by plane.
你坐飞机去那里也同样便宜。
此时的 plane 和 by 之间没有任何修饰成分，因此 by plane 表示的是“抽象”的坐飞机的运输方式，又如：
He stood by the plane catching a glimpse of the sublime sunset.
他站在飞机旁看了一眼壮丽的日落。
此时的 plane 和 by 之间定冠词 the 修饰，因此 by the plane 表示的是位置关系，表示他的位置是靠近飞机的。
由此可见，on track 和 on the track 的区别也类似，后者有定冠词 the 修饰，特指某条具体的轨道或跑道等，那么 on the track 就是在特定的“位置”上，也就是“在轨道上”等意思，例如：
There are many manholes on the track.
轨道上有许多检修孔。
特指在某条道路上有很多检修孔。类似的还有 on the road，on the way 等等，它们都可以表示在具体的某条路或道上，例如：
The children are playing with a ball on the road.
孩子们在路上玩球。
Our car broke down on the way to work, so we were late for the meeting.
我们的车在上班的路上抛锚了，所以我们开会迟到了。
此类的介词短语所表示的“路”有时会被抽象使用，如 on the track of sth，意为“追踪，追查”等，还有 on the road to 或 on the way to 等等，意为”在……中或路上”等，例如：
Police are on the track of the two gunmen running out of the bank.
警方正在追踪从银行逃出的两名枪手。
She is on the road to recovery after the operation.
她正在术后康复。
The scenic spot is on the way to becoming a popular holiday resort.
这个景点即将成为一个受欢迎的度假胜地。
Track 是一个可数名词，而 on track 中的 track 没有任何修饰语，那么它是“抽象”的用法，如 be on track 表示“做法对头，稳步前进”等，例如：
The plan was on track before it got dinged by the budget cuts.
在预算削减使计划受阻之前，该计划稳步前进。
因此，人们常常说 back to track 来表示步入正轨或回复正常，例如：
He tried to get his life back on track after bankruptcy.
破产后，他试图让自己的生活重回正轨。
在使用任何介词短语之前，首先都要识别它们，要把它们用在刀刃上，否则很容易词不达意，而且有时会背道而驰，例如：
I had to finish off this sales report before I went to bed.
我必须在睡觉前完成这份销售报告。
I had to finish off this sales report before I went to the bed.
我必须在走到床之前完成这份销售报告。
