The Surviver

by Kang Xue

Year 2020 has prepared for us

numerous ways to die——

dried-up loofah lungs,

a crashed bus in the lake, or

being swallowed up by whirlpools like a fish…

Each morning when I wake up,

I look at myself as a survivor.

My dreams at night

are also about survival.

With a little optimism, on the way to work,

passing the taro leaves with water droplets,

I would take a snap, a simple photograph.

If you should ask me about my aspiration,

I would answer: a student of water droplets,

or, more precisely, a student of

water droplets on taro leaves:

where do they come from and what is their end?

I know a little about tomorrows, but the idea of death

still fills me with deep sorrows.

But, on a taro leaf, so huge and wide,

death takes the center stage, with a shine.
